Kolkata sits in a moderate seismic zone, which means the ground here can and does move, and how your home is built determines what happens when it does. We say this not to alarm you but because, in ten-plus years of working on homes and commercial spaces across New Town and the wider city, we have seen what thoughtful structural detailing does for a building's resilience, and it is worth understanding before you build or renovate.

Why Seismic Zone Matters for a Kolkata Home

India's Bureau of Indian Standards divides the country into seismic zones based on the historical intensity of ground shaking. Kolkata falls in a moderate risk zone, which is neither the safest nor the most severe classification. What that means in practical terms is that buildings here do need to be designed with seismic forces in mind, but the requirements are not as demanding as those for cities closer to active fault lines.

The key document governing structural design in India is the National Building Code along with IS 1893 for seismic loads and IS 13920 for ductile detailing of reinforced concrete structures.
