Howrah is not just the city across the bridge, it is a place with its own grain and its own pace, and when a client calls us from Shibpur or from one of the new riverside apartments near the station, we already know the kind of project we are walking into. The old town houses carry decades of lived-in character, the industrial-era buildings have bones worth keeping, and the newer apartment blocks are catching up fast. We have been working here long enough to know that Howrah homeowners tend to be practical, particular about space, and not interested in anything that feels imported from a catalogue.

The housing stock in Howrah runs a real range, from narrow multi-storey town houses in the older lanes where families have lived for three or four generations, to industrial-era structures that were not originally built for residential comfort, to the newer flat projects coming up along the river. Each type asks something different from us. The old homes often need us to work around fixed structural walls and low beam heights, while the newer flats give us a cleaner shell but usually very compact floor plates that need careful space planning from the start.

Howrah sits right on the river, which means the humidity here is real and persistent, and we plan for it in every material choice we make, from the wall finish in bathrooms to the carcass material inside a modular kitchen. The monsoon brings waterlogging in pockets of the older areas, so we check drainage access and slab condition before we commit to any flooring plan. Daylight can be tricky in the dense older lanes where buildings sit close together, so we work hard on artificial lighting layers and on keeping colour palettes light enough to compensate. Traffic around Howrah Station affects site deliveries, so we schedule material movement early and plan accordingly.

A local studio for Howrah
Our studio is in New Town, which puts us close enough that a site visit to Howrah is genuinely easy and not a half-day affair. We have worked on old Howrah town houses, on renovation projects near Shibpur, and on newer apartment fits, so we are not coming in fresh. We understand the contractor ecosystem on this side of the river, the material markets nearby, and what realistic timelines look like here.

That is honestly most of what we do in older Howrah homes. We map the existing structure first, figure out what is load-bearing and what is not, and build the design around what is already there. Keeping the bones of a family home and making it genuinely livable is something we find more interesting than starting from a blank flat.
Compact Howrah flats almost always have a layout that made sense on paper but feels wrong once you live in it, so we start by reworking the flow before we touch any finish. Storage planning, furniture sizing, and how natural light moves through the flat are the three things we sort out first, and most of the space gain comes from there rather than from any structural change.
We are very honest with clients about this. For Howrah specifically, we lean toward moisture-resistant carcass boards in the kitchen and wardrobes, exterior-grade paint in bathrooms, and flooring materials that handle seasonal expansion without cracking. We have seen enough interiors fail here because the right material was not used, so we would rather have this conversation early.
