We get asked, almost on every single project, why one plywood quote came in at nearly double another for what looks like the same 19mm sheet, and the honest answer is that plywood grading is one of the most misunderstood cost drivers in Kolkata interior work, because MR, BWR, and BWP plywood can sit side by side on a dealer's rack looking essentially identical, same thickness, same face veneer, same price tag if the dealer is being loose with the labelling, and yet behave completely differently the moment real moisture gets involved. Since our climate here puts every board in this city through more humidity stress than plywood specification sheets, written for a national average, ever account for, getting this grade decision right is one of the few places in an interior budget where spending correctly the first time saves you a full re-do later.

What MR, BWR, and BWP Actually Mean

The three grades differ entirely in the resin used to bond the wood veneers together, not in the wood species or the number of plies, and that resin is what determines moisture resistance.

MR grade, which stands for Moisture Resistant, uses a urea formaldehyde resin. It tolerates occasional dampness, a splash, brief humidity exposure, but it is not designed to survive standing water or sustained high humidity, and prolonged exposure causes the layers to delaminate, meaning the veneer sheets separate from each other.
