Retrofitting a Barrier-Free Bathroom Into an Existing Flat Without Full Demolition

The curb in a conventional Indian bathroom is not decorative, it is doing real waterproofing work, containing the wet zone so that shower spray and standing water do not migrate onto the dry floor or, worse, seep through a floor-to-floor slab joint into the flat below, and removing it without addressing that function is how curbless retrofits fail, with water tracking under the vanity or out through the door gap within the first monsoon. Repositioning the Drain Without Moving the Stack
A genuinely curbless floor depends on getting water to a single low point efficiently, and the retrofit challenge is that the existing drain outlet, tied into the building's vertical soil stack, usually cannot be relocated more than a modest distance without breaking into the slab to reroute pipework, something we avoid for the same structural reasons as above. Slip Resistance and Tile Selection for a Curbless Floor
Once a bathroom loses its curb, the entire floor becomes one continuous wet-capable surface rather than a contained wet zone, and that changes what tile specification is acceptable across the whole room, not just around the shower head. We specify a minimum R10 anti-skid rating for the full curbless floor in these retrofits, moving to R11 where the household includes anyone with a genuine mobility limitation, since a barrier-free bathroom that trades a step hazard for a slip hazard has not actually solved the underlying safety problem, and we lay these in a smaller format, generally 300x300 millimetres or a mosaic-scale tile in the wet zone itself, because more grout lines across a sloped curbless floor add real traction that a single large-format slab cannot match at the same R-rating. Door Widths, Grab Bars and the Parts of the Retrofit That Aren't About Water

We also lower the fitted height of the WC where the household needs it, generally to a comfort height of around 17 to 19 inches at the seat rather than the standard 15 to 16 inch Indian fitting, and this is a straightforward swap that does not touch plumbing runs at all provided the existing waste outlet position is kept.
What a Realistic Retrofit Timeline and Scope Look Like
