How Often You Actually Need to Reseal Granite Counters in a Kolkata Kitchen

We get asked about granite sealing more than almost any other maintenance question that comes up after a modular kitchen handover, and the honest reason is that most of the advice floating around online, the generic "reseal your granite once a year" line that gets repeated on every home improvement blog regardless of climate, simply does not hold up to how a Kolkata kitchen actually gets used, because it was written for a drier, less oil-heavy cooking style than what runs through most of the kitchens we design across New Town, Salt Lake, and Rajarhat, and it ignores the fact that our municipal water carries enough dissolved minerals that hard water alone will work against a sealant faster than it would in a lot of other Indian cities. So rather than give you a single number and leave it at that, we want to walk through what actually determines how often your specific counter needs resealing, give you a genuine test you can run yourself in about two minutes with nothing more than a glass of water, and lay out the schedule we actually tell our own clients to follow once their kitchen is a year or two old and the honeymoon period of a brand new counter has worn off.

Why the "Once a Year" Rule Does Not Actually Apply Here

Granite is a natural igneous stone, and even though it reads as dense and impervious to the eye, it is riddled with microscopic pores that a fabricator seals with a penetrating sealant, usually a fluoropolymer or silicone-based impregnator, at the time of installation, and that sealant is what stops oil, turmeric, and coloured liquids from soaking into the stone rather than sitting on top of it where a wipe can remove them. The problem with the blanket once-a-year recommendation is that it assumes a fairly gentle, low-oil cooking style and a water supply with minimal mineral content, and neither of those assumptions holds for a typical Kolkata household. Bengali cooking, and really most of the cuisines we see in the kitchens we build across the city, leans heavily on mustard oil and ghee at high volumes, both of which are aggressive against a sealant because they are thin enough to migrate into pores quickly and they carry pigment, from turmeric and red chilli particularly, that stains the moment the sealant's resistance drops even slightly. On top of that, Kolkata's municipal water, and even more so borewell water in parts of Rajarhat and the newer blocks of New Town where a lot of flats still rely partially on groundwater, tends to carry a meaningfully higher mineral load than what a granite sealant is tested against in a lab setting, and that mineral film builds up on the surface and very gradually degrades the sealant's water-repelling properties from above even as oil is working on it from the cooking side. Between the two, we see sealant breakdown running noticeably faster than the twelve-month mark in a genuinely active Kolkata kitchen, sometimes visibly so within eight to nine months on a counter positioned right next to the stove or the primary chopping zone.

The Water Drop Test: How to Actually Check Instead of Guessing

Rather than resealing on a fixed calendar and possibly wasting money reapplying sealant to a surface that does not need it yet, or worse, waiting a full year on a counter that needed resealing three months ago, we tell every client to run a simple water absorption test roughly every two to three months once the kitchen passes its first birthday, and it takes less time than boiling a kettle. Take a tablespoon or so of plain water and pour it in a small puddle, roughly the size of a coin, on a clean, dry section of your countertop, ideally somewhere you actually use regularly like the main chopping area next to the sink rather than an untouched corner near the wall, since that untouched section will always test better and give you a falsely reassuring result. Let the puddle sit undisturbed for exactly ten to fifteen minutes without wiping or touching it, and then look closely at how the granite around the water has changed. If the water is still sitting as a visible bead or puddle on the surface after that time and the stone underneath looks exactly as it did before you poured it, your seal is intact and you do not need to reseal yet. If the water has visibly spread, soaked in, or left a darker ring or patch on the stone where it was sitting, even a faint one, that is the sealant telling you it has broken down in that spot and moisture, and by extension oil and pigment, is now getting into the pores rather than being repelled, which means it is time to reseal, ideally within the next couple of weeks rather than letting it run further. We recommend running this test on at least two or three spots on the same counter, the zone right beside the stove, the main cutting board area, and one spot near the sink, because sealant does not degrade evenly across a slab and the areas that see the most oil splash and the most standing water are almost always the first to fail.

The Schedule We Actually Recommend

Based on what we consistently see across the kitchens we have maintained relationships with over the years, here is the resealing cadence we give clients once their counter is past the initial one-year mark that most fabricators already build into their warranty terms. For a dark granite like Black Galaxy, Absolute Black, or Steel Grey, which are dense, low-porosity stones and by far the most common choices in the kitchens we design because they hide staining well and photograph beautifully, we tell clients to run the water drop test every three months and expect to actually reseal roughly once every twelve to fifteen months in a normally active kitchen, stretching to eighteen months if the household cooks lighter and uses less oil. For lighter and more porous granites, stones like Kashmir White, Colonial White, or the paler Ivory Brown varieties that a number of our clients in Salt Lake specifically request for a brighter kitchen aesthetic, the pore structure is naturally more open and we tell clients to test monthly and expect to reseal every eight to ten months, sometimes closer to six if the counter sits directly beside the stove or handles the bulk of the daily chopping. If your kitchen runs what we would call heavy-use conditions, meaning cooking for a joint family of six or more people daily, frequent frying, and a water supply you know to be hard (a quick giveaway is white scale buildup around your tap aerators or on your electric kettle's heating element), we push the testing interval down to every six to eight weeks regardless of stone colour, because in our experience that combination of factors degrades sealant faster than either factor alone would predict. None of these numbers are meant to replace the test itself, they are a starting point for how often to bother testing, and the test is what actually tells you whether to reseal.

What Happens If You Skip It, and What Resealing Actually Costs

Skipping resealing does not damage the granite itself in any structural sense, the stone underneath is fine, but it means every oil spill, every turmeric-stained ladle set down for a minute too long, and every splash from a pressure cooker has a real chance of leaving a permanent stain rather than wiping off, and we have seen counters in Rajarhat kitchens that were only three years old develop dark, blotchy patches around the stove purely from deferred resealing rather than any fault in the original stone selection. Resealing itself is a straightforward job, most fabricators or a competent stone maintenance contractor in Kolkata will do it for a modest per-square-foot charge that is a fraction of what replacing a stained slab costs, and the process is simple enough that a confident homeowner can do it themselves with a quality penetrating sealant bought from a hardware supplier, applied to a clean, fully dry surface and left to cure for the full time the product specifies, usually somewhere between twenty-four and forty-eight hours during which the counter should not get wet or oily. What we would caution against is using a cheap, generic "granite polish" spray as a substitute for an actual penetrating sealant, since those products sit on the surface and add shine without doing anything to close the stone's pores, and clients who rely on them often discover during our water drop test that their counter never had real protection in the years they thought it did.
