Hiding the Harvesting: Integrating Rainwater Tanks Into Landscape and Garden Design

Nearly every client who asks us for a rainwater harvesting system in New Town or Rajarhat has the same unspoken worry sitting behind the request, which is that they have seen enough poorly executed installations on neighbouring plots to picture exactly what they do not want, namely a bulky black or blue polyethylene tank parked awkwardly against a boundary wall with a tangle of PVC piping running across it in full view of the gate. That image is not wrong as a description of how most contractors approach the job, because plumbers are trained to solve for water capture and storage capacity, not for how a 2,000 litre or 5,000 litre tank reads visually against a garden that someone has spent real money getting right. Our position, after specifying storage systems on dozens of independent houses and larger bungalow plots across New Town and Salt Lake over the past decade, is that a rainwater harvesting tank should never be the dominant visual object on a plot, and that with a bit of upfront planning during the landscape design phase rather than as an afterthought once the plumber has already poured a slab, it does not have to be.
Why This Has to Be a Landscape Design Decision, Not a Plumbing Afterthought
The single biggest mistake we see on plots where the owner installed rainwater harvesting themselves or left it entirely to a plumbing contractor is that the tank placement gets decided after the garden layout is already fixed, which means the only available spot is whatever gap happens to be left over, usually a narrow strip along a side boundary that gets full sun and zero landscaping attention. Once the tank lands there, everything downstream, the pipe runs, the overflow outlet, the access chamber for cleaning, all gets routed in the most convenient way for the plumber rather than the most attractive way for the person who has to look at that corner of the garden every day. We now insist on bringing the rainwater storage question into the very first landscape design conversation, at the same time we are deciding where the lawn sits, where the deck goes, and where the tree canopy will eventually shade the plot, because a tank that is planned for from day one can be worked into the bones of the design rather than bolted on top of it.
On a recent independent house project on a 2,400 square foot plot in New Town's Action Area I, this meant we sited the primary storage tank, a 5,000 litre capacity unit, directly beneath what became the side courtyard's raised planter bed rather than as a freestanding above-ground tank, which let us keep the entire courtyard visually clean while still giving the plumber straightforward access to the inlet and outlet lines running down from the terrace above.
Underground Tanks: The Cleanest Solution When the Soil and Budget Allow It
Burying the tank entirely below grade is, in our experience, the single most effective way to remove a rainwater harvesting system from the visual equation, because once it is underground there is nothing left to see except a small, flush-fitted manhole cover for inspection and cleaning access, which can itself be finished in the same paving material as the surrounding courtyard or lawn so it disappears almost completely into the ground plane. Underground RCC or high-density polyethylene tanks in the 3,000 to 10,000 litre range are viable on most New Town and Rajarhat plots, since the water table in this part of greater Kolkata generally sits low enough during the dry months to allow a tank depth of 5 to 7 feet without excessive dewatering complications during construction, though we always confirm this with a soil test before committing to a below-grade design rather than assuming it will work.
The tradeoff is cost and access. An underground RCC tank typically runs anywhere from 40 to 70 percent more than an equivalent-capacity above-ground polyethylene tank once you account for excavation, waterproofing, and the structural reinforcement needed to bear the load of whatever sits above it, whether that is a lawn, a driveway, or a paved courtyard, and you do need to plan the pump chamber and access point carefully so that future desilting and maintenance do not require tearing up finished landscaping to reach the tank. We generally recommend underground storage for clients who have the budget headroom and who want the courtyard or front lawn kept completely uninterrupted, and we steer clients with tighter renovation budgets toward the concealment strategies below instead.
Making the Tank Part of the Planting: Raised Planters and Integrated Beds
Where a full underground tank is not in the budget, our next preferred approach is to design a raised planter or garden bed that physically wraps around or sits directly on top of an above-ground tank, so the tank becomes structural infrastructure hidden inside what reads as a piece of landscape architecture rather than a utility object standing alone. This works particularly well along side boundaries and rear garden edges, spots that in most Kolkata plots do not get enough usable width for a proper lawn anyway and end up as awkward leftover strips.
The construction is straightforward: a low retaining wall in brick or precast concrete block, built at a height that clears the tank by 4 to 6 inches on all sides, filled with a lightweight growing medium rather than heavy garden soil so it does not become a structural load concern, and planted with something dense enough to screen the gap without demanding constant maintenance. We favour areca palm clusters, dwarf bamboo, or a mixed planting of croton and hibiscus for these screening beds in the Kolkata climate, because all three tolerate the heat and humidity well and grow fast enough to establish good coverage within one to two growing seasons. The access lid for the tank gets set into the top of the planter bed, usually disguised with a decorative paver or a shallow tray of loose gravel that lifts out easily when the plumber needs to check the float valve or clean the filter.
Decorative Screening for Tanks That Cannot Be Buried or Boxed In
Some sites simply do not have the option of an underground tank or an integrated planter, usually because the plot is too tight, the soil conditions are poor, or the client is retrofitting harvesting onto an existing house where the pipework is already fixed and moving it would mean breaking into finished flooring. In those cases, decorative screening is the fallback, and it works better than most people expect when it is designed properly rather than treated as an apology for the tank being visible.
A slatted timber or WPC (wood plastic composite) screen built as a freestanding frame around the tank, with enough gap between the screen and the tank body for airflow and access, is our most common recommendation, since WPC in particular holds up to Kolkata's monsoon humidity far better than solid timber and needs almost no maintenance beyond an occasional wash down. We typically specify a screen height that clears the tank by 8 to 10 inches and slat spacing of around 1.5 inches, which is tight enough to obscure the tank from a standing eye line at the gate or from the street but open enough that the whole enclosure does not trap heat or moisture against the tank wall. For clients who want a softer look than timber slats, a simple trellis planted with a fast climber like money plant or a flowering vine such as rangoon creeper achieves a similar effect within a season or two, though it takes longer to reach full coverage than a built screen does.
Getting the Pipework Out of Sight Too
A tank hidden behind a planter or a screen still looks unfinished if the inlet pipe from the roof downspout and the overflow line to the recharge pit are left running exposed across a wall in bright white or grey PVC. We route these lines wherever possible either through a shallow chase cut into the boundary wall and finished flush with the wall plaster, or buried in a narrow trench beneath the planting bed itself, and where a short exposed run is genuinely unavoidable, such as the final connection into the tank inlet, we specify pipe in a matte black or terracotta-toned finish rather than standard white, which reads as far less intrusive against brick, stone cladding, or dark-toned garden paving.

A Note on Vastu and Tank Placement
Because a meaningful share of our residential clients in New Town and Salt Lake ask for Vastu-compliant layouts, it is worth flagging that underground water storage has a traditionally preferred zone, generally the northeast corner of the plot, and most of the concealment strategies described above, whether underground burial, planter integration, or screening, can be adapted to sit within that zone without much compromise to the design.
