Commercial ply typically uses urea formaldehyde resin, which is moisture resistant but not waterproof, so it can tolerate humidity and the occasional splash but will delaminate if it stays saturated for an extended period, and this is rated BWR, boiling water resistant, or in cheaper variants not rated for water exposure at all.
