How to Stop Damp Patches on a Ground-Floor New Town Flat Wall

Seepage from adjoining soil, on the other hand, tends to show up as a patch concentrated on one specific external wall, often the one bordering a sunken garden strip, a planter bed, or a boundary wall where the ground level outside sits higher than the floor level inside, and it gets noticeably worse for a few days right after heavy rain rather than staying at a constant intensity year round the way rising damp typically does. We always start a site visit with a plumb bob and a moisture meter reading taken at several heights on the affected wall, because the pattern of readings tells us within minutes which of the two problems, or occasionally both together, we are actually dealing with.

The damp-proofing sequence we follow for New Town ground floor units
For a confirmed rising damp case, we start by hacking off the internal plaster to roughly 300 to 450 millimetres above the highest visible tide mark, exposing the bare brick or block work so the wall can actually dry out rather than sealing moisture in behind a fresh coat of plaster, which is the single most common mistake we see from painters who are asked to just repaint over a damp patch without addressing what is underneath.
