What Solid Wood Actually Is, and Why That Construction Fights Kolkata's Air
Solid wood flooring is exactly what it sounds like, a single piece of timber milled to a plank profile, tongue and grooved on the edges, and finished with a lacquer or oil top coat, and the entire plank from the visible surface down to the subfloor contact point is the same species of wood, whether that is oak, teak, or one of the tropical hardwoods sold locally as "Burma teak" substitutes. Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air continuously, and a solid plank does this along its full thickness in every direction, so when Kolkata's relative humidity swings from a dry-season low of around 45 to 50% in December and January up to a sustained 85 to 95% through the June to September monsoon stretch, a solid plank is absorbing a genuinely large volume of moisture relative to its mass and then releasing it again a few months later.
