Gypsum Board vs POP vs Grid Ceiling: Picking the Right Base Material Before You Talk Design

Nearly every client who comes to us wanting a false ceiling starts the conversation with design references, coloured mood lighting, a stepped cove profile they saw somewhere, a specific depth of recess they want for concealed LED strips, and we understand the instinct because design is the part that is visible in the finished photos, but we always redirect the first real conversation toward the base material instead, because the material decision has to happen before the design decision has any chance of holding up. This is not us being difficult about sequencing for its own sake, it comes directly out of a pattern we see constantly in Kolkata flats, which is a beautifully designed POP ceiling with a lovely cove profile that starts showing hairline cracks along its seams within two to three seasons of monsoon humidity, at which point the client is left with a choice between living with a spiderwebbing ceiling or tearing out design work that cost real money to install in the first place. So before we get into layout or lighting on any ceiling project, we walk clients through what gypsum board, POP, and metal grid systems each actually do when exposed to our specific humidity pattern, because the material you choose determines not just how the ceiling looks on handover day but whether it still looks that way three monsoons later.

The Three Materials, and What Each One Actually Is

POP, or Plaster of Paris, is a gypsum-based plaster that gets mixed on site with water and applied wet over a metal mesh or chicken wire frame fixed to the slab above, then hand-finished and shaped while it sets. It has been the default false ceiling material in Kolkata for decades because it is relatively inexpensive, allows for genuinely intricate hand-sculpted profiles, cove details, and decorative mouldings that are harder to achieve with prefabricated board, and most local labour is deeply experienced in working with it. The core vulnerability is baked into the application method itself, because POP is mixed and cured on site rather than manufactured under controlled factory conditions, which means its final moisture content and density depend heavily on how it was mixed, how fast it was applied before setting, and how much ambient humidity was in the room during curing, all of which vary from crew to crew and even from day to day on the same site.

Gypsum board, sometimes called plasterboard or by trade names like Gyproc, is a factory-manufactured panel, gypsum core sandwiched between two layers of paper or fibreglass facing, produced under controlled conditions and cut to standard sheet sizes before being screwed onto a metal or wood frame on site. Because the material itself is manufactured rather than mixed wet on site, its density and moisture content are consistent from sheet to sheet, and moisture-resistant variants exist specifically formulated with additives in the gypsum core and a treated facing paper that resists water absorption, which matters enormously in a climate like ours.

Metal grid ceilings, sometimes called grid and tile or T-grid systems, use an exposed or semi-concealed metal frame, typically galvanized steel or aluminium, into which lightweight tiles made of mineral fibre, metal, or PVC are simply dropped into place rather than fixed permanently. This is the system most associated with commercial and office ceilings because individual tiles can be lifted out for access to wiring, ducting, or plumbing above without disturbing the rest of the ceiling, but it has a growing residential use case too, particularly in utility areas, kitchens, and covered balconies where moisture exposure is highest and design flexibility matters less than durability and serviceability.

Moisture Tolerance: Why POP Struggles Specifically in Kolkata

Kolkata's relative humidity sits above 70% for large stretches of the year and regularly pushes into the 85 to 95% range through the June to September monsoon, and this matters enormously for POP because the material is inherently more porous and more prone to absorbing ambient moisture than a factory-sealed gypsum board is. When POP absorbs humidity from the air over repeated wet-dry cycles across a monsoon season, it expands very slightly, and when it dries back out it contracts, and this repeated micro-movement is precisely what produces the hairline cracking pattern we see so often along POP ceiling seams, corners, and cove edges, typically starting to appear somewhere between the first and third monsoon season depending on how well the original mix and application were executed. The cracking is rarely structural in the sense of the ceiling being unsafe, but it is a genuine cosmetic failure that requires the crack to be filled, sanded, and repainted, and if it recurs across multiple seasons, as it often does once the material has developed that expansion-contraction pattern, some clients end up refinishing the same ceiling every year or two, which is not a cost anyone budgeted for when they first approved the design.

Gypsum board, particularly moisture-resistant variants, handles this humidity cycling meaningfully better because the manufactured core has a more uniform, denser structure to begin with and the treated facing paper resists surface moisture absorption directly, so while gypsum board is not literally waterproof and should never be used as a substitute for actual waterproofing in a wet zone, it tolerates ambient humidity swings without the same repeated expansion-contraction cracking that plagues POP. Metal grid systems sidestep the moisture absorption question almost entirely, since galvanized steel and PVC tiles do not absorb ambient humidity the way gypsum-based materials do, which is exactly why grid ceilings remain the standard choice in kitchens, utility balconies, and bathroom zones where humidity is highest and constant.

Where We Land on This for Different Rooms

For a living room or bedroom that stays reasonably climate controlled with regular air conditioning use, which meaningfully reduces the ambient humidity a POP ceiling is exposed to indoors, POP still has a legitimate place, especially where a client wants a specific sculpted cove profile or layered ceiling design that is genuinely easier to achieve by hand. But we no longer default to POP the way the market broadly still does, and in rooms with less consistent AC use, or in ground-floor and lower-floor units in New Town and Rajarhat where ambient humidity tends to run slightly higher due to proximity to open land and slower air circulation, we now recommend moisture-resistant gypsum board as the default base even when the final design still wants a stepped or cove profile, because gypsum board can achieve most of the same visual language as POP with meaningfully better crack resistance over the life of the ceiling.

For kitchens, utility areas, covered balconies converted into functional space, and any zone directly adjacent to a wet area, we recommend metal grid systems without much hesitation, because the moisture performance and serviceability advantages outweigh the reduced design flexibility in exactly the rooms where practical performance should outrank ornamental ceiling detail. Getting the Base Right Before the Design Conversation

Once the material question is settled, the actual design conversation, cove depth, lighting layout, whether to go single-level or stepped, becomes a much easier and more durable decision, because you are no longer designing on top of a material that might crack out from under the design within a couple of seasons.
