Greywater Recycling for Kolkata Homes: What's Actually Feasible in an Apartment or Independent House

We get asked about greywater recycling far more often than we get asked to actually design one, and a good part of that gap comes down to a basic confusion that's worth clearing up before anything else, which is that greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting are two entirely different systems solving two entirely different problems, even though they get lumped together constantly in casual conversation and even in some contractor pitches. Rainwater harvesting captures water falling on a roof or paved surface and either channels it to recharge groundwater or stores it for later use, and it depends entirely on rainfall, which in Kolkata is heavily seasonal, arriving mostly between June and September during the monsoon and leaving long dry stretches the rest of the year where a rainwater system sits mostly idle. Greywater recycling is a completely different proposition, capturing wastewater that a household already generates every single day, specifically from basins, showers, and laundry, filtering and treating it to a level appropriate for non-potable reuse, and feeding it back into the home for purposes like flushing toilets or watering a garden, which means it produces a steady, year-round volume tied directly to how many people live in the house and how much water they actually use, not to the weather.
What Counts as Greywater and What Doesn't
The technical definition matters here because it determines what plumbing you actually need to separate, and getting this wrong is the single most common mistake we see in greywater systems that underperform or fail outright. Greywater is wastewater from basins, bathtubs, showers, and washing machines, water that is used and genuinely dirtied with soap, skin oils, and detergent residue but has not come into contact with faecal matter. Blackwater, by contrast, is wastewater from toilets and, in most plumbing codes including the ones we work under for NKDA and KMC submissions, from kitchen sinks as well, since kitchen wastewater carries food particles, grease, and a higher organic and pathogen load that makes it unsuitable for the lighter treatment a greywater system provides. This kitchen sink classification catches a lot of clients off guard, because the intuitive assumption is that kitchen water, which looks similar to bathroom water, should be treated the same way, but the higher contamination load from food waste means kitchen greywater needs blackwater-level treatment to be reused safely, so nearly every practical residential greywater system we design excludes the kitchen from the collection loop entirely and routes it to the normal sewage line instead.
For an average Kolkata household of four, basin, shower, and laundry water together typically generates somewhere in the range of 150 to 250 litres a day, depending heavily on how often the washing machine runs and whether the household bathes with buckets or showers, and that volume is genuinely significant against a typical household's total daily flushing demand of 200 to 300 litres calculated in our earlier piece on low-flow fixtures and water savings, meaning a well-designed greywater system can realistically cover a large share, often 60 to 80 percent, of a household's toilet flushing water needs from water that would otherwise simply go down the drain.
The Plumbing Separation an Independent House Can Actually Achieve
An independent house, the kind we design fairly often for clients building on plots in Rajarhat, New Town's outer blocks, or the greater Kolkata periphery where standalone construction is more common than in the denser core, has a real structural advantage for greywater recycling, because the plumbing can be designed as two entirely separate drainage networks from the start if the decision is made early enough in the design process, ideally at the same stage we're finalising the architectural drawings and before any pipework is cast into the slab. In new construction, we run a dedicated greywater collection line from bathroom basins, showers, and the laundry point, keeping it physically separate from the blackwater line serving toilets and the kitchen, and that greywater line feeds down to a settling and filtration unit, typically positioned at ground level or in a basement utility area if the house has one.
The treatment train for a residential-scale system doesn't need to be elaborate to be effective for non-potable reuse, and what we typically specify is a three-stage approach, starting with a settling tank that lets larger particles like hair, lint, and soap scum settle out over a retention period of a few hours, followed by a filtration stage using a sand and gravel media filter or, for households wanting a more compact footprint, a commercially available multi-media cartridge filter, and finishing with a basic disinfection stage, usually a small chlorine dosing unit or, in installations where the treated water will only be used for sub-surface irrigation and never contacts the toilet flush line, sometimes skipped entirely since untreated but filtered greywater used immediately for garden irrigation carries much lower risk than water that will sit stored for a day before being pumped into a toilet cistern. The treated water then either heads to a small storage tank feeding dedicated pipework to toilet cisterns, which requires the toilets to have been plumbed with a second, purple-coded supply line from day one to avoid any risk of cross-connection with the potable water supply, or it heads directly to drip irrigation lines for garden beds and lawn areas, which is by far the simpler and more forgiving reuse path and the one we recommend as a starting point for most independent house clients rather than jumping straight to toilet flush reuse.
For a typical independent house on a plot of 3 to 5 kottahs with a household of four to six people, a complete greywater system covering settling tank, filtration, basic disinfection, storage, and a dedicated irrigation distribution line typically runs somewhere between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹3.5 lakh depending on whether toilet flush reuse is included (which adds the cost of dual plumbing runs throughout the house) or whether the system is scoped for garden irrigation only, which is considerably simpler and cheaper to install and, in our experience, delivers most of the practical benefit for the investment involved, since garden and landscape watering is exactly the kind of use where slightly imperfect water quality carries essentially no risk.
Why Multi-Unit Apartments Are a Genuinely Harder Problem
The picture changes substantially for apartment living, which describes the overwhelming majority of our New Town and Salt Lake residential clients, because a greywater system depends on capturing an individual unit's wastewater before it merges into the building's shared drainage stack, and in the vast majority of existing apartment buildings across New Town and Salt Lake, that stack was designed and cast as a single combined line serving every unit on that riser, with no plumbing separation built in at construction and genuinely no practical way to retrofit that separation without breaking into shared risers that run through other people's flats, which is simply not something a building's plumbing, structure, or its residents' association will accommodate after the fact. This is the honest limitation we walk every apartment client through before they get too attached to the idea of a full recycling loop, because promising a retrofit that isn't actually achievable in the building's existing plumbing does nobody any favours.
What is genuinely achievable within a single apartment unit, even in an existing building with combined drainage, is a point-of-use greywater capture system scoped to a single fixture rather than the whole flat, most commonly capturing water from just the bathroom basin or, in flats with a separate utility area, the washing machine outlet, using a small under-counter or balcony-mounted collection and basic filtration unit that holds anywhere from 50 to 150 litres, with the filtered output manually or automatically directed to water balcony plants or, in flats with an attached utility balcony, used for mopping and general cleaning. It's a modest system by comparison with what an independent house can achieve, typically costing ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 depending on the collection point and filtration quality chosen, but it's real, low-maintenance, and doesn't require any building-level plumbing changes or society approval, which makes it the practical entry point for the great majority of our apartment clients who want to do something meaningful about wastewater reuse without taking on a project the building simply cannot support.
Where a client is developing an entire new apartment building from the ground up rather than buying into an existing one, which does happen among our commercial and small-developer clients working on plots around Action Area II and the Eco Park periphery, the calculation flips back in favour of a genuine building-wide system, because separate greywater and blackwater risers can be designed into the plumbing from the first drawing, with a centralised treatment plant in the basement or service area serving every unit's toilet flushing and common-area landscape irrigation needs, a scale at which the economics of treatment equipment become considerably more favourable per litre treated than any single-unit retrofit could achieve.
