Retail Lighting Design: The CRI and Color Temperature Numbers That Sell Products

We get asked a version of the same question by nearly every retail client who walks into our New Town studio: "can you just make the shop look bright and premium." That request always needs unpacking, because bright and premium are not one setting, they are the outcome of a handful of very specific, very measurable lighting decisions that most shop owners have never had explained to them in plain terms. A garment that looks rich and saturated under one fixture can look washed out and slightly grey under another fixture that is, on paper, just as bright. The difference almost always comes down to two numbers that rarely appear on a retailer's radar until something looks wrong on the shelf, the Colour Rendering Index and the correlated colour temperature, and getting both of these right for the specific category of product being sold is, in our experience, the single highest-leverage decision in any retail fit-out.
What CRI Actually Measures, and Why 80 Is Not Good Enough for a Shop Floor
Colour Rendering Index is a measure, on a scale up to 100, of how accurately a light source reveals the true colours of an object compared to natural daylight. A CRI of 100 is a perfect reference, natural daylight or an ideal blackbody source, and every point below that represents some degree of colour distortion, reds looking duller, blues shifting slightly, skin tones and fabric dyes losing saturation. The catch is that most standard commercial LED fixtures sold in the Indian market, the kind that get installed by default in budget shop fit-outs, sit somewhere between CRI 70 and CRI 80, which is perfectly fine for a warehouse or a stairwell and genuinely damaging for anywhere a customer is expected to evaluate colour, texture or quality before buying.
We do not specify anything below CRI 90 for any retail project we take on, and for categories where colour accuracy is central to the purchase decision, apparel, cosmetics, jewelry, we push for CRI 95 or above wherever the budget allows it. The price difference between a CRI 80 fixture and a CRI 95 fixture of similar wattage typically runs somewhere between twenty and forty percent more per fixture in the Indian market, and on a shop of even modest size that adds up to a real number on the estimate. But we walk every client through a simple demonstration when this question comes up, holding the same garment or product under a CRI 80 sample fixture and a CRI 95 sample fixture side by side, and the difference is obvious to anyone within about three seconds, no technical explanation required. Once a client has seen that comparison in person, the conversation about whether the higher CRI fixture is worth the premium tends to resolve itself.
Color Temperature Is Not One Setting for the Whole Store
The second number, correlated colour temperature, measured in Kelvin, describes whether a light source reads as warm and yellowish or cool and bluish, and this is where we see the most inconsistent specification across Kolkata retail interiors, often because a single colour temperature gets applied uniformly across an entire store regardless of what is actually being sold in each zone.
Apparel generally reads best under a colour temperature in the 3000K to 3500K range, warm enough to flatter skin tones in the fitting area and give fabric a rich, inviting quality, without drifting so warm that it distorts whites and pastels toward yellow. We typically specify 3000K for the general sales floor of a clothing store and hold a slightly cooler 3500K for any area with large mirrors or fitting rooms, since customers are effectively evaluating how the garment will look on their own skin in that specific spot, and a colour temperature that is too warm can make even flattering garments look slightly dull on the body.
Food retail, whether that is a bakery counter, a grocery display, or a QSR service counter, behaves differently and benefits from being closer to 3500K to 4000K, because food generally needs a crisper, fresher-reading light to avoid looking oily or stale, particularly for baked goods and produce where a warm amber cast can make fresh items look aged. Jewelry is its own category entirely and typically wants the coolest end of the spectrum among the three, often 4000K or slightly above, paired with the highest CRI a budget can support, because the entire value proposition of jewelry display is sparkle and clarity, and a warm colour temperature tends to mute the crispness of stones and polished metal in a way that undersells the product. Jewelry is also the category where we lean hardest on accent lighting rather than general ambient light, because it is the contrast between a bright, tightly focused beam on the piece and a comparatively dim surrounding case that creates the sense of sparkle in the first place. A jewelry case lit evenly and generally, even at a high CRI, will always look flatter than the same case with a narrow-beam accent fixture doing the actual work.
Layering Accent Light to Kill Shadow on Display Shelves
A mistake we see repeated across small and mid-size retail fit-outs in Kolkata is relying on a single layer of general ceiling-mounted downlights to illuminate an entire store, ambient light plus display shelving plus everything else from one uniform grid. This produces flat, even light across the room, which sounds appealing in theory but in practice creates two problems. First, general downlighting from directly overhead throws a shadow straight down the front face of any shelved or hung product, which is precisely the face the customer is looking at, so the merchandise itself sits in its own shadow even though the room reads as bright. Second, uniform lighting gives the eye nothing to focus on, no visual hierarchy, which means a customer's attention drifts evenly across the whole space rather than being pulled toward the specific products the retailer most wants to sell.
Our standard approach layers at least three distinct lighting types into any retail fit-out we design, each doing a different job. General ambient lighting, usually a moderate density of recessed downlights, establishes overall visibility and safety across the floor without trying to do any selling on its own. Task lighting, typically under-shelf LED strips or small linear fixtures mounted at the front edge of a shelf, washes light down the face of the product rather than from directly above, which is what eliminates the shadow problem and lets colour and texture read properly at eye level. Accent lighting, narrow-beam adjustable spotlights, usually track-mounted or on a flexible monopoint system, then gets aimed specifically at hero products, window displays, or seasonal features, creating the pools of higher intensity light that naturally draw the eye and establish a visual hierarchy across the store. The accent layer is typically specified at two to five times the intensity of the surrounding ambient light, that ratio is what produces the sense of drama and focus that makes a display feel curated rather than just illuminated.
Getting the Fixture Placement Right Relative to Fixtures and Sightlines
Beyond the numbers, physical placement of the fixtures relative to display furniture matters as much as the specification on paper. A common error is mounting track lighting directly above a shelving unit rather than slightly in front of it, which throws the beam straight down onto the top surface of the product rather than across its face where a customer's eye actually lands. We generally recommend an accent fixture be positioned so its beam strikes the display at roughly a thirty-degree angle from vertical, close enough to daylight's natural angle that it reads as flattering rather than clinical, while still being steep enough to avoid throwing a customer's own shadow across the product as they approach to look closer. For mannequins and standing displays, we typically cross-light from two angles rather than a single spot, which softens the harsh single-direction shadow that one spotlight alone tends to create across a face or garment.

Ground Floor Retail on Subdivided Plots
A fair number of the retail fit-outs we take on in New Town and Rajarhat sit on the ground floor of a plot that the owner has developed as two attached units rather than a single large structure, often to run one unit as a shop and lease or occupy the other as a home. That subdivision decision, made at the architecture stage, has direct downstream consequences for lighting design, because it usually means a narrower frontage, a shared party wall that limits where fixtures can be mounted or wired, and less available glazing along at least one side than a standalone commercial plot would offer.
