The Five-Year Question: Which One Is Still Working
This is where the comparison actually matters, because both mechanisms work fine on day one, and the question every client should be asking is which one survives being folded and unfolded roughly 300 to 400 times a year, which is the realistic usage rate for a guest room that also functions as a living space or a home office during the day. A well-specified Murphy bed with a quality gas-strut mechanism, the kind rated for a genuine 15,000 to 20,000 open-close cycles, will comfortably outlast a decade of daily use with nothing more than an annual check of the strut tension and anchor bolts, because the moving parts are entirely mechanical, sealed, and not directly exposed to the humidity the way an open steel hinge frame is.
