Solid Teak: The Benchmark, and Why It Still Costs What It Costs
Solid teak, meaning furniture actually cut and joined from teak timber rather than veneered onto something else, remains the material we recommend when a client wants furniture that genuinely improves with age and is willing to pay for it, because teak carries a naturally high oil content, roughly 3 to 5 percent by weight depending on the grade and where the timber was grown, and that oil is what gives teak its long-standing reputation for outdoor durability, since the oil resists water penetration into the grain and slows the UV degradation that turns most woods brittle and grey over a few seasons. On an exposed New Town terrace that catches direct sun for six or more hours through the day for most of the year, solid teak left unfinished develops the well-known silvery grey patina within twelve to eighteen months, which is UV breaking down the surface lignin, and this is a cosmetic change rather than a structural one as long as the piece is genuinely solid teak through its full thickness, because the oil content deeper in the wood keeps protecting the timber underneath even after the surface has weathered. Through monsoon, solid teak does still swell and contract with the seasonal humidity swing, typically 1 to 2 percent dimensional movement across the grain between the driest part of winter and the wettest part of the monsoon, but because the movement is happening in a single, dense, oil-rich material rather than at a bonded interface between two different materials, we rarely see the joint failures and delamination that show up in composite alternatives, and pieces we installed as far back as 2016 in open Rajarhat terraces are still structurally sound today, just carrying the expected grey patina unless the client has kept up with an annual teak oil reapplication.
The honest downside is cost, since genuine solid teak furniture, sourced through the reputable suppliers we work with rather than the mixed-origin "teak" sold cheaply in some local markets, runs meaningfully higher than either engineered alternative, often two to three times the price of a comparable teak-veneer piece for the same design, and it is heavy, which matters on a terrace where furniture gets rearranged seasonally or moved indoors during the worst of the monsoon.
Teak Veneer Over WPC Core: A Reasonable Middle Ground, With One Real Weak Point
The second option, a thin layer of real teak veneer bonded over a wood-plastic composite core, is what we specify most often for clients who want the visual warmth and grain of real teak without the full solid-teak budget, and structurally the WPC core itself is genuinely well suited to Kolkata's humidity, since it is manufactured from wood fibre blended with a polymer binder and does not absorb and release moisture the way solid wood does, meaning the core itself resists the swelling that plagues pure wood furniture through the monsoon. The weak point, and it is a real one we have had to address through callbacks on a handful of early installations, sits specifically at the bonded interface between the teak veneer and the WPC core, because those two materials expand and contract at different rates under UV heating and humidity cycling, the veneer moving with real wood's moisture response and the WPC core barely moving at all, and over two to three monsoon seasons on furniture left fully exposed without any overhang protection, this differential movement can start lifting the veneer at edges and corners, showing up first as a barely visible edge line that widens into visible peeling if left unaddressed. Full WPC: The Practical Choice for Fully Exposed, Low-Maintenance Balconies
Full wood-plastic composite furniture, with no real wood veneer at all and instead a wood-fibre and polymer blend right through the piece, often finished with a UV-stabilised coating and a wood-grain embossed texture, is what we reach for on balconies that take direct sun and direct monsoon rain with no overhang at all, and on New Town high-rise balconies above the eighth or tenth floor where wind-driven rain reaches surfaces that a lower-floor overhang would otherwise shield. WPC does not swell with humidity the way real wood does since there is no exposed wood grain absorbing moisture, and a good quality WPC piece with proper UV stabilisers in the polymer blend, which is worth asking about specifically since cheaper WPC furniture skips this and fades or chalks within a single summer, will hold its colour and dimensional stability for six to eight years of full Kolkata exposure with essentially no maintenance beyond an occasional wash down. How We Actually Decide, Balcony by Balcony
The decision on any given project comes down to two questions we walk through with the client directly, first how much direct sun and direct rain the specific balcony or terrace actually takes based on its orientation and floor level, since a north-facing, lower-floor balcony in a Salt Lake block with a deep overhang sees a fraction of the UV and rain exposure of a west-facing, upper-floor New Town balcony with no overhang at all, and second how much ongoing maintenance the household is realistically going to keep up with, since solid teak's patina management and annual oiling is a genuine, recurring task rather than a one-time decision.
