How Toughened Glass Actually Behaves When It Cracks
Toughened glass, sometimes called tempered glass, is made by heating a standard glass pane to roughly 620 degrees Celsius and then cooling it rapidly with jets of air, a process that locks the surface into compression while the core stays in tension. That internal stress pattern is what gives toughened glass its strength, typically four to five times that of ordinary annealed glass of the same thickness, and it is also why building codes across India accept it as safety glazing in the first place. When toughened glass does eventually break, whether from an impact, a temperature shock, or a manufacturing flaw, the entire pane shatters almost instantly into small, roughly cube-shaped granules rather than long dangerous shards, which is genuinely a good safety outcome in isolation.
The part that homeowners rarely hear from the glass vendor is what happens to the railing itself once that happens. A toughened panel that dices does not stay in the frame, it falls away in a shower of granules, and until a replacement panel is fabricated and fitted, which in our experience takes anywhere from three days to two weeks depending on thickness and shape, there is an open gap in the railing exactly where the pane used to be. On a ground floor terrace that gap is a minor inconvenience. On a fourteenth floor balcony with a toddler or an excitable dog in the house, it is the kind of gap that keeps a parent up at night.
Why Laminated Glass Changes the Calculation
Laminated glass is built differently. Two or more panes of glass are bonded together with a tough interlayer, almost always polyvinyl butyral or PVB, at thicknesses that typically run in 0.38 millimetre increments, and the resulting sandwich behaves very differently under stress. When laminated glass breaks, it does crack, the surface will craze into a spider-web pattern much like a car windscreen, but the interlayer holds the fragments bonded to it instead of letting them fall away. The panel stays inside the frame, still functioning as a physical barrier, even though it now needs to be scheduled for replacement.
This single difference is why laminated glass is increasingly the specified default for balcony balustrades on upper floors in newer international building codes, and it is also the material we push clients toward whenever a project involves children, elderly residents, or pets who spend real time on the balcony. A dropped flowerpot from the floor above, a stray cricket ball, or a chair leg catching the panel during a monsoon cleanup can crack a laminated pane, but it will not open a hole in the railing the way a toughened pane can. The price gap between the two, roughly ₹200 to ₹300 more per square foot for laminated glass once you account for fabrication, edge polishing and installation, is not a premium for looking different, since properly toughened and properly laminated glass can look identical once installed. What that extra cost buys is the interlayer itself, plus the more involved fabrication process, and on a standard New Town balcony that runs 8 to 10 feet wide with a railing height of about 1.1 metres, which works out to roughly 9 to 11 square feet of glass, the total difference between the two options usually lands between ₹1,800 and ₹3,300 for the entire railing. Matching the Glass to the Floor, Not Just the Budget

For a bungalow or a low-rise building of two to three storeys, toughened glass alone is a defensible choice, since the fall height if a panel does dice is limited and a replacement is usually easy to schedule without leaving anyone at real risk in the meantime. For any unit on the fourth floor or above, which describes the overwhelming majority of New Town's residential towers, we recommend laminated glass as the default, and for families with young children or a terrace used heavily for parties and gatherings, we often go a step further and specify laminated toughened glass, where the individual panes bonded together are themselves toughened first. That combination costs more, typically ₹950 to ₹1,300 per square foot installed, but it gives you both the dicing safety of toughened glass and the stay-in-place behaviour of the laminate, which is about as safe as balcony glazing gets without moving to a completely different railing material.

Framing and Fixing Details That Matter as Much as the Glass Itself
The glass type is only half the safety equation, and we have seen otherwise good laminated glass installed on hardware that undermines the whole point of choosing it. Spigot fixing, where the glass is held by a row of stainless steel posts along the base with no visible top rail, gives the cleanest, most minimalist look and is the finish most New Town clients ask for by name, but every spigot is a concentrated point load, so the engineering behind the fixing centres and the anchor depth into the slab matters enormously, and this is not a detail to leave to whichever fabricator quotes the lowest price. A continuous U-channel base fixing, where the glass sits in an aluminium or stainless steel channel running the full width of the balcony, spreads the load more evenly and is, in our experience, the safer and more forgiving option for laminated glass specifically, even though it reads as slightly less sleek. Whichever method you choose, the National Building Code's minimum railing height of 1 metre for residential balconies (we generally build to 1.1 metres for extra margin) should never be treated as negotiable, and a stainless steel or aluminium handrail cap along the top edge both protects the glass edge from chipping and gives small hands something more forgiving to grip than a raw glass edge.
