Foyer and Entrance Lobby Design for a Salt Lake Home

Foyer and Entrance Lobby Design for a Salt Lake Home

The foyer is the smallest space in a Salt Lake home and it carries more traffic than any other, because every guest, every delivery and every pair of wet shoes in July passes through it, and yet it is usually the last thing planned, after the drawing room layout is frozen and the kitchen has already taken the circulation, so what gets built is a leftover rectangle near the main door where footwear piles up, the intercom handset sits at a strange height and the umbrella has nowhere to drain. We plan it the other way round, because on a tight plot in a planned township the entrance is where the plot geometry, the staircase, the meter wall and the street level all meet, and a bad resolution at that point is one of the more expensive things to reverse later.

If you are reading this you probably have one of three situations: the ground floor of an older Salt Lake house where the entrance sits under or beside the stair, a flat in a cooperative building where your own door opens straight into the living room with no transition at all, or a newly rebuilt G+3 or G+4 where parking has eaten the ground floor and the lobby has become a passage between a car and the first flight of steps. Each of those needs a different answer, and none of them is solved by buying a console table and a mirror.

What follows is how we plan an entrance, in the order the decisions actually get made, and where a studio like ours earns its fee against the other kinds of provider you are also considering.

What the Salt Lake building stock does to an entrance

Salt Lake is a planned grid of blocks inside numbered sectors, and the plots are regular but tight, with neighbours on both sides usually built right up to their boundary line, which means every bit of daylight and cross ventilation your foyer will ever get has to come off your own land. A good part of the housing stock dates from the sixties through the nineties, and those houses tend to give you a shallow porch, a plinth lifted a few steps above road level and a stair landing crowding the door, while the newer rebuilds next to them push the entrance into a parking bay instead. Sector V is the separate commercial and IT belt, and a home foyer should not be designed like an office reception.

In a cooperative building the boundary that matters is the ownership one, because the common lobby and landing belong to the society, so a shoe cabinet outside your door or a change of lobby flooring goes to the committee before it goes to a carpenter, and that sequence is what we work through in Renovating a Salt Lake Cooperative Home: A Practical Guide. If your ground floor carries a commercial use the entrance becomes a reception with footfall and wet points, a different brief set out in Salon Interiors in Salt Lake: Wet Points, Mirrors and Footfall, and if you are a plot owner weighing a full rebuild rather than a fit-out then the entrance sits inside the much larger set of decisions covered in Apartment Building Architecture in Salt Lake for Plot Owners.

The entrance fixes the plan, not the finishes On a tight Salt Lake plot the door position, the stair landing and the meter wall get locked early, so moving the foyer later usually means moving a wall.

The order we plan a foyer in, and why finishes come last

Basically the foyer is three measurements before it is a mood board: the clear width between the door and whatever stops you, the swing of the main door and of any grille outside it, and the level difference between the road, the plinth and the finished floor inside. Get those down first and most of the layout decides itself, because a door that swings inward across the shoe zone kills the shoe zone, a grille that opens outward over a step makes that step a hazard in the monsoon, and a level change hidden under a dark floor is exactly what people trip on. Only once circulation and services are settled do we draw cabinetry and choose materials, and that order is why a foyer either works or merely looks decorated.

  1. 01Measure door, grille, stair and street level
  2. 02Fix circulation width and the shoe line
  3. 03Place meter, DB, intercom and inverter
  4. 04Detail storage, lighting and finishes

The main door position is also where vastu requests land, and we take them as a planning input rather than an argument, so the entry direction and the things that should not face the door become constraints at this stage, when they cost nothing, instead of at tiling stage, when they cost a great deal, and where a requirement collides with the structure or with the sanctioned plan we say so plainly and offer the nearest workable option, which is the approach behind our vastu compliant design work. The foyer also distributes to everything beyond it, so if one of those rooms is a home gym the entrance absorbs that traffic too, and Home Gym Design in a Salt Lake House covers how that room is planned.

Shoes, umbrellas and the monsoon load

Kolkata gives you a long humid stretch and a serious monsoon, so an entrance here is a wet room for a few months of the year whether you designed it that way or not. The catch here is that shoe storage usually gets sized for the average shoe rather than the largest pair in the house, so boots and sports shoes end up living outside the unit, which defeats the cabinet entirely. We size the dry shoe run for the actual inventory, ventilate it rather than sealing it, keep a separate washable patch with a slope for wet footwear and dripping umbrellas, and set a seat at a height an older family member can actually use.

ZoneWhat it has to holdWhat usually goes wrong
Dry shoe storageDaily footwear for the whole householdDepth set for one shoe size so boots stay outside
Wet patchUmbrellas and wet slippers through the monsoonWashable floor and a fall left out of the drawing
Service wallMeter board DB intercom and routerSealed behind fixed panelling so nothing can be serviced
Drop zoneParcels keys and the dog leashNo surface at all so everything lands on the floor

Light and air when the entrance faces a neighbour's wall

When both side margins are tight and the neighbour is already built to the boundary, a foyer very often has one source of light and that source is the main door, which you keep shut. So we borrow light rather than inventing a window the plot cannot give, with a glazed transom over the door, a fixed louvre or jaali panel into the stair shaft where privacy and safety allow, and a mirror placed to bounce whatever daylight the door frame does let in. Air matters as much as light, because a shut, humid, shoe filled box smells, so we plan a small extract path or a louvred cabinet back. If the brief includes a hand wash point or a powder room off the entrance, the drainage and waterproofing follow the same logic we use for bathroom design.

The services nobody puts on the mood board

Entrance walls in Salt Lake homes carry more equipment than any other wall in the house, because this is where the electricity meter and the distribution board usually sit, along with the intercom, the inverter and its battery, the pump switch, the router and the letter box. If panelling is drawn before those are located, either the equipment gets covered in a way that turns servicing into a demolition job, or a technician cuts your new veneer open in the second year. So we mark them on the drawing, decide which get a hinged or magnetic access panel and which get relocated while the walls are still open, because at the end of the day a foyer is judged on how it looks after five years of meter readings and not on the handover photographs.

Finishes that survive feet, water and humidity

Flooring at an entrance should be chosen for wet grip first and appearance second, because a polished surface at the one spot where wet shoes land is a genuine hazard, and the joint matters too, since a tight dark grout line hides the street dust that a pale wide one advertises. Skirting takes the mop every day, so we keep it in a material that tolerates water rather than a painted strip that swells by the second monsoon, and anything within splash range of the door, the shoe unit carcass included, we specify in a board that handles moisture, with the door frame and shutter treated on every face including the top edge, which is where swelling starts and where nobody checks.

What this looks like as a working arrangement

Our argument for ourselves is structural rather than decorative. Sumana Kumar is the principal architect and stays on the project through sanction and site instead of handing it to a junior once the agreement is signed, so the person who decided where your door swings is the person answering the carpenter's question three months later. The design is worked out for your actual plot or flat rather than selected from a package, which is the only way a foyer with a stair landing at an awkward angle gets solved, and every option comes to you with its cost consequence attached, so the budget moves with your decisions instead of surprising you at billing. Architecture, interiors and the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation sanction route sit with one team, so you are not carrying drawings between an architect, a contractor and a liaison agent, and if your ground floor carries retail, that sanction sequence is its own subject, which we set out in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Building Plan Sanction for a Mixed-Use Building With Ground-Floor Retail in Salt Lake. Where a decision touches ground coverage, setbacks or height, those vary by plot and have to be confirmed for your plot before anybody promises anything.

If you want to see what this produces, Classical Interior Design Project in Newtown is an example of that category of work, and Residential Building Project in Salt Lake is another one in the same belt.

When a different kind of provider suits you better

If your brief is basically a shoe cabinet, a mirror and a repaint, with the walls, the door and every service staying where they are, a good carpenter working off a sketch will do it faster and for less money than any studio, and you should take that route with a clear conscience. If you already like a modular brand's catalogue and want their system installed with their warranty, their own designer will serve you better than we will, because we would only be redrawing their product. If all you need is drawings for a loan or a society submission, a drafting service is the honest spend. Our fee makes sense when the entrance involves structure, levels, services, a sanction drawing or a plot geometry that refuses to cooperate.

Talking to us about your entrance

For the wider context, our Salt Lake area page covers how we work across the blocks and sectors, and interior design across Salt Lake covers the room by room side of it. When you are ready, send us the plan if you have one, a few photographs of the door and the stair, and tell us what annoys you about the space today, and we will tell you what is actually possible on that plot before anybody quotes a number, so get in touch and we will take it from there.
