Glass Block Partitions to Borrow Light Between Rooms
Where the darkness is in a room that does have a neighbouring space with genuine daylight, a living room next to a naturally bright balcony-facing bedroom, for instance, but the two are separated by a solid partition wall, we frequently retrofit a glass block partition in place of a section of that wall, replacing solid masonry with hollow glass blocks, typically in the 6x6 or 8x8 inch format, that transmit and diffuse light through to the darker side while still maintaining a genuine wall, meaning privacy and, done correctly, comparable acoustic separation to the masonry it replaces. We favour glass block over a plain glass panel or borrowed-light window for this specific application because the blocks diffuse rather than transmit a clear view, which matters enormously in a residential retrofit where the two rooms on either side are usually a living space and a bedroom, and nobody wants a direct sightline between them, and the installation itself is a fairly standard masonry retrofit, the existing wall opening is framed out and the blocks are set in a mortar bed with reinforcement ties back into the surrounding structure, work that in our experience runs about a week for a partition in the 20 to 40 square foot range, considerably less disruptive than most people assume before we walk them through it.
Swapping Solid Internal Doors and Walls for Borrowed-Light Versions
A smaller-scale version of the same borrowed-light principle applies at the door level, and it is one of the least expensive retrofits in this entire category, replacing a solid internal door leading into a dark room with a version that has a frosted or reeded glass panel inset, or in some cases replacing an upper section of a partition wall between a dark interior corridor and an adjoining lit room with a fixed clerestory-style glazed panel above standard door height, which lets light spill across without any loss of privacy at eye level. Mirror placement, done properly rather than as decoration, is the last lever here, and the principle we follow is to position a mirror directly opposite or adjacent to whatever light source the room does have, whether that is a window, a borrowed-light glass block panel, or a light well, rather than on a wall unrelated to the light path, since a mirror only amplifies light it is actually catching.
