UPVC or Aluminium Windows for a Monsoon-Facing Room in Kolkata

When a client asks us whether to fit UPVC or aluminium windows on the room that catches the worst of the monsoon wind, we don't hand over a generic pros and cons list, because the honest answer depends on which wall the room sits on, how hard the rain drives sideways during a July squall off the Bay of Bengal, and how carefully the seal profile was detailed at the sill, and after installing and troubleshooting windows on more than a hundred homes across New Town, Salt Lake and Rajarhat since 2014, we've learned that the frame material matters less than most homeowners assume while the gasket, the drainage channel and the fitting tolerance matter more than almost any brochure admits.

Why a rain-facing wall in Kolkata is not the same problem as a dry-side window

During the monsoon months from June through September, the wind over the Bay of Bengal pushes rain in at a steep sideways angle rather than letting it fall straight down, and any room whose windows face south or southeast, which describes a large share of the plots we work on in New Town's Action Area I and II and along the eastern edge of Salt Lake, takes a soaking that a north or west facing room never experiences in the same way, so a window that performs perfectly well on a sheltered balcony can still let water track in along the bottom rail of a rain-facing bedroom or study within its first monsoon season. We start every window brief by asking which direction the room actually faces and how exposed the elevation is, because a fourteenth floor unit in Rajarhat with nothing to break the wind needs a different seal detail than a ground floor room tucked behind a boundary wall, and that single question changes our material recommendation more than brand preference ever does.

How UPVC holds up against driven rain

UPVC profiles are extruded with multiple internal chambers, typically five or more in the mid-range profiles we specify, and the corners are fusion welded rather than screwed together, which means there is no mechanical joint at the frame corner for water to work its way into over a few monsoon cycles. The gasket set in a UPVC window is almost always EPDM rubber, and EPDM keeps its flexibility and seal pressure far longer than the softer PVC gaskets sometimes fitted to cut cost, so on a room that takes direct driven rain for four months of the year, the gasket choice inside the frame matters as much as the frame material itself. The tradeoff is weight and profile depth, since a UPVC casement or tilt and turn sash runs noticeably heavier and bulkier in sightline than a slim aluminium slider, which is why we rarely recommend it for a full glass wall or a wide sliding door, but for a single or double leaf window on a monsoon-facing bedroom or a home office where water intrusion has already been a recurring complaint, the sealed chamber and welded corner earn their higher per square foot cost.

Ask for the weld test Before you finalise a UPVC fabricator, ask to see a corner sample cut in half. A properly fusion welded joint shows a continuous, slightly rounded weld bead with no visible seam, while a merely glued corner shows a straight line joint that will separate under years of thermal expansion and contraction.

Where standard aluminium windows actually fail during the rains

Aluminium is not the wrong material for a Kolkata monsoon, and in fact the slim sightlines and lower cost per square foot are exactly why it remains our default recommendation for balconies, staircases and secondary rooms across the New Town and Salt Lake homes we've delivered over the past decade, but the failure point is almost never the aluminium extrusion itself, since the metal doesn't rot, warp or absorb water the way an old wooden frame would. What actually lets water through is the corner crimping on a standard sliding profile, which loosens by a millimetre or two over five to seven years of daily opening and closing, combined with the weep holes at the bottom track that are meant to drain accumulated water back outside but silt up with dust and pollen within a year or two of installation if nobody clears them, and once those weep holes are blocked, rain that would otherwise drain away sits in the track and finds the nearest gap. The gaskets on a budget aluminium slider are also frequently a cheaper PVC compound rather than EPDM, and PVC hardens and cracks under Kolkata's summer heat within three to four years, so by the time the next monsoon arrives the seal has already lost most of its compression.

Why the seal profile decides the outcome more than the frame material

If we had to rank the three variables that determine whether a monsoon-facing window leaks, the frame material would come third behind the gasket compound and the sill drainage detail, because we've seen aluminium windows with a properly upgraded EPDM gasket and a sloped, weep-hole-clear sill outperform a UPVC window that was fitted without back putty or with the sill left level instead of sloped away from the room. A sill needs at least a five to seven degree outward slope so water sheds away from the room rather than pooling at the base of the frame, and the drip line beneath the external sill edge, a small groove cut into the underside of the sill projection, stops water from creeping back along the underside of the frame and staining the wall below the window, a detail that gets skipped constantly by fabricators working to a tight quote. Older Kolkata housing stock, particularly in the northern and central parts of the city, still carries a fair number of solid timber window frames, and homeowners retrofitting those rooms sometimes ask whether a plywood faced panel would resist swelling better, and the honest answer is that plywood is manufactured specifically to counter the grain-direction weakness of solid timber by cross laminating thin veneers (Wikipedia), which does help with dimensional stability compared to solid wood, but it still can't match a properly gasketed UPVC or aluminium frame for a window taking direct wind-driven rain for a third of the year.

What we specify for south and southeast facing rooms in New Town and Salt Lake

On the projects where the window brief tells us the room faces the prevailing monsoon wind directly, which is common on plots along the eastern boundary of Salt Lake and on several of the wider east-facing towers we've worked on in New Town's Action Area I, our default specification is a UPVC casement or a tilt and turn sash with a five-chamber profile and EPDM gaskets throughout, paired with a sill that we insist gets a minimum six degree slope and a cut drip groove regardless of what the fabricator's standard detail shows, because we would rather add a day to the site schedule for that detail than field a seepage complaint eighteen months after handover. On rooms that are only partially exposed, a covered balcony in front, an adjacent building blocking the worst of the wind, or a north or west orientation where driven rain is rare, we're comfortable recommending a good quality aluminium slider with an upgraded EPDM gasket kit, since the cost saving on a home with twelve to fifteen windows adds up meaningfully and the exposure genuinely doesn't demand the UPVC premium. Fixing a window that is already leaking before you commit to a full replacement

Not every leaking window needs to be torn out, and before we quote a replacement we always check three things on site, whether the weep holes at the base of the track are actually open, since a thin wire or a screwdriver clears most blockages in under a minute, whether the gasket has visibly hardened or cracked at the corners where it takes the most flex, and whether the external sealant bead between the frame and the wall has pulled away from the masonry, which happens routinely within four to five years even with a good quality silicone. A cracked gasket alone, on an otherwise sound aluminium frame, can often be re-gasketed for a fraction of a full window's cost, and resealing the external frame-to-wall joint with a fresh polyurethane sealant, which holds up to UV and moisture cycling noticeably better than standard silicone over a Kolkata monsoon, resolves a surprising number of the seepage complaints we get called out for.
