HDHMR, or High Density High Moisture Resistance board, is a newer engineered product worth knowing about because it occupies a genuinely useful middle position between MDF and plywood for certain wardrobe applications, since it is manufactured under significantly higher density and pressure than standard MDF, which closes up much of the porous fiber structure that lets MDF absorb moisture in the first place, giving it moisture resistance that approaches plywood while retaining the smoother, more uniform surface that makes MDF popular for painted or high-gloss shutter finishes. Even with the right core board specified, the laminate finish and, critically, the edge banding applied to every cut edge of every shutter and shelf, determine whether moisture actually reaches the board at all, since a board's core material resistance only matters once ambient humidity has found a way in, and the exposed edge of a cut panel, wherever a hinge is mortised in, a shelf pin hole is drilled, or a drawer slide is fitted, is always the most vulnerable entry point regardless of what core board sits beneath the laminate. We specify PVC edge banding applied with a hot-melt adhesive and machine-pressed for a tight, gap-free bond on every wardrobe we fabricate, rather than the thinner paper-based edge tape some budget fabricators use, because a paper edge that lifts even slightly exposes the raw board edge directly to humid air, and this single detail, more than almost any other, is what separates a wardrobe that performs for over a decade from one that starts showing edge swelling within three or four years even when a reasonable core board was used.
