How to Fix a Top-Floor Bedroom That Stays Hot at Night Even With the AC On

When a client calls us about a top floor bedroom that stays hot at night even with the AC running for hours, we can usually guess what is happening before we have even seen the flat, because this is one of the most consistent complaints we hear from families living on the uppermost floors of towers across Rajarhat, Action Area I, and the newer high-rise pockets of New Town, and in almost every one of these cases the air conditioner itself is working exactly as it should, cooling the air in the room down to the set temperature within the first half hour, while the room still feels warm and sticky by 2 or 3 in the morning because the ceiling overhead, a bare RCC slab that has spent the entire day absorbing direct Kolkata sun, is radiating that stored heat back down into the room for hours after sunset, which is a fundamentally different problem from a cooling capacity problem and needs a fundamentally different set of fixes than simply upgrading the AC unit.

Why the Room Feels Hot Long After the Sun Has Gone Down

An air conditioner is designed to cool the air in a room and remove humidity, and it does that job by measuring the air temperature near its thermostat sensor, so once that number hits the set point the compressor cycles down, yet the temperature a body actually feels in a room depends on two separate things working together, the air temperature and the radiant temperature of the surfaces around you, and on a top floor bedroom under an exposed RCC roof those two numbers can be several degrees apart well into the night. How Much Heat an Exposed RCC Roof Actually Holds

Why Simply Upgrading the AC Rarely Solves It

We understand the instinct, since a room that stays hot naturally makes a homeowner think the existing AC is undersized or failing, and in a handful of cases where the unit is genuinely old or improperly charged with refrigerant that is worth ruling out first, but for the large majority of top floor complaints we investigate, swapping a 1.5 ton split for a 2 ton unit only shortens how long it takes to bring the air temperature down initially, without touching the radiant heat still pouring off the ceiling all night, so the room cools faster at first and then climbs back toward discomfort as the compressor cycles off and on trying to hold a set point against a ceiling that keeps re-heating the air from above. Fixing It at the Roof: Insulation and Reflective Treatment

The most effective intervention happens above the slab, on the terrace itself, and we generally recommend clients choose between two proven approaches depending on whether the roof also needs waterproofing attention at the same time, which it very often does on a building past its first decade. The False Ceiling Air Gap Fix From Inside the Bedroom

Even with roof level work done, we still recommend a false ceiling for a top floor bedroom, not primarily for the cove lighting or the aesthetic step it allows, though those are welcome side benefits, but because a gypsum board or POP false ceiling dropped four to six inches below the slab creates a genuine air gap that acts as a thermal buffer between the hot slab and the room below, and when we line the inside of that cavity with a rockwool or glass wool insulation batt before boarding it up, the combination of the air gap and the insulation material meaningfully slows how much of the slab's residual radiant heat ever reaches the room. The detail that gets missed most often by contractors working without an interior designer involved is ventilation of that cavity, since a false ceiling gap that is completely sealed on all sides can trap warm air inside it rather than letting it dissipate, so we specify a small perimeter gap or a discreet vent detail at the cornice line to let that trapped heat escape rather than building up over successive hot days.
