Bathroom Interior Design in Salt Lake, Kolkata

Bathroom Interior Design in Salt Lake, Kolkata

Bathroom Interior Design in Salt Lake, Kolkata

If you are looking at a bathroom in a Salt Lake flat or house and trying to work out whether it needs a refresh or a proper rebuild, the honest answer usually sits in the plumbing rather than in the tiles, and that is the part nobody puts on a mood board. It is the smallest room in the house and the most heavily serviced one, so we plan it from the services outward, right, because the soil stack position and the floor level over the slab decide what the room can become.

Salt Lake is a planned grid of blocks and sectors, and much of what we open up was built between the sixties and the nineties, when bathrooms were planned around small fixture counts, narrow service shafts and plumbing practice that has changed completely since. Plots here are regular but tight, and neighbours have often already built right up to the boundary, so the window drawn to open onto air now faces somebody else's wall two feet away. Add the long humid stretch that Bidhannagar shares with the rest of the city and a serious monsoon on top, and a bathroom detailed for a dry climate starts shedding grout and growing a dark patch above the shower within two or three seasons.

We are an architecture and interior design studio based in New Town, working across the Salt Lake, New Town and Rajarhat belt since 2014, with 330+ buildings delivered. Sumana Kumar, the principal architect, stays on the project through the drawings, through the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation sanction route where the work needs it, and through site, because in a bathroom the decisions that go wrong are the ones taken at nine in the morning when the plumber asks where exactly the trap is going.

What the Salt Lake building stock does to a bathroom

Open up a bathroom in an older Salt Lake house and you usually find a sunken floor filled with whatever debris was lying around at the time, holding water quietly for decades, which is the real reason the ceiling below carries the stain the owner repaints every year. The second thing is the supply line, often galvanised iron narrowed from the inside, so the flow at the shower has dropped and the household has quietly adapted. The third is the soil stack, placed to suit the structure rather than a modern layout, and since it runs down through every floor below you, moving it is a building decision rather than a bathroom decision. In the newer G+3 and G+4 rebuilds the lines are usually PVC or CPVC, so the constraint shifts to floor level, slab thickness and how much height the false ceiling is allowed to eat. There is the household pattern too, since many Salt Lake families have somebody leaving for Sector V, the separate commercial and IT belt, at the same hour every morning, so the real brief is often two people getting ready in parallel.

i
The sunken floor is where the budget usually hides In older Salt Lake bathrooms the filled sunken slab is often saturated, and opening it up adds demolition, fresh waterproofing and refilling to the scope, so we check it before a number is quoted rather than after.

Planning the box before you choose a single tile

The first drawing is not a tile layout, it is a plan of clearances, because a bathroom works or fails on the clear width in front of the WC, how far the basin counter projects before it catches your hip on the way past, the width of the shower once the glass and the curb are in, and whether the door swings into the one place a person actually stands. In the tighter Salt Lake bathrooms the door is more often the problem than the fixtures, and rehanging it to open outward frees more usable floor than any fitting you could buy. We keep the basin and the storage out of the spray, and decide early whether the shower sits behind a glass partition with a low curb or runs as a level floor with the slope doing the work, because that choice runs straight back into the waterproofing and the drain positions.

The catch here is that these dimensions cannot be adjusted later, since once the WC is fixed its centreline against the side wall is final unless you break the floor, so we take the layout to the point where you can see yourself using the room, with the mirror in front of your face rather than above it, the shower control reachable from outside the spray, and the niche at a height you reach without stepping out of the water.

The services decisions that are expensive to reverse

Everything below the tile line and inside the wall is work you do once. The soil stack and the floor trap decide where the WC and the shower can go, and relocating either means a slab penetration, so both are confirmed against the actual building before the layout is frozen rather than assumed from a plan. A concealed cistern needs real wall depth, so we either find a wall that can take the niche or build a duct wall for it, and we always keep an access panel. Diverters, outlet heights, the geyser position against the electrical load, and a provision for a washing machine where the household wants one, all of it is fixed on a services drawing before first-fix, because after tiling those things can only be changed by breaking tiles.

The bathroom usually reaches us inside a wider job, so it is planned as part of the residential interior design rather than as a standalone room, and where walls or wet areas are moving it becomes renovation and remodelling work. Compact TV Unit & Media Wall project in Kolkata is an example of that category of work, and Residential Building Project in Salt Lake is another example of the same kind of job.

Waterproofing, air and the monsoon

Waterproofing is where a bathroom either lasts or does not, and it is almost entirely a sequence problem rather than a product problem. The membrane has to go onto a clean, cured surface, be coved up the walls well above floor level and higher on the shower wall, every pipe penetration needs collaring individually, and the floor has to be ponded and held with water long enough to prove itself before a single tile goes down. Skipping that test is the commonest shortcut on site and the most expensive one, because by the time the leak shows, the tiling, the fittings and the ceiling below are all in place. Through a Kolkata monsoon the assembly stays wet for weeks, so where a bathroom backs onto a wardrobe, as it often does in Salt Lake flats, that wall is treated as a wet wall on both faces.

Drying out between uses is the other half of the same problem. Natural ventilation is the first move where the plot allows it, which here usually means a high window or a louvred opening onto your own side setback with obscure glazing, placed so air crosses the room instead of sitting in it. Where the neighbour's wall has closed that off we size a mechanical exhaust against the volume of the room rather than fitting whatever the hardware shop had in stock, and we route the duct to outside air, because an exhaust discharging into the ceiling void is just moving the damp somewhere you cannot see it.

Storage, light and every option with its cost attached

Storage in a bathroom fails for one of two reasons: it was built from a material that cannot live in that humidity, or it was sized for photographs rather than for what a household actually keeps. We plan for the real inventory, which means closed storage for refills and cleaning supplies, drawers rather than deep shutters for small daily things, a niche beside the WC within reach, and a recessed shelf inside the shower. Carcass material is chosen for a wet room rather than carried over from the bedroom, exposed hardware is specified for humidity because ordinary hinges and handles pit and stain within a couple of seasons here, and the vanity is detailed so the trap and the stop cock stay reachable. Light deserves the same attention, basically, because a single ceiling point behind you puts your face in shadow at the mirror. For a space where storage drives the entire plan, Home Library and Reading Nook Design in Salt Lake works through the same logic, and every option here reaches you with its cost attached, so the budget moves with your decisions.

How the work runs on site, and where sanction comes in

A bathroom rebuild is a short job with a strict order, and almost every problem on site comes from that order being broken. The two mornings when somebody from the studio has to be standing in the room are the day the trap and the levels are set and the day before tiling starts, which is why the principal architect stays on rather than passing it along. Most single bathroom work inside an existing flat does not touch the sanctioned envelope, but the moment a job grows into added floor area or a rebuild, it runs through Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation as the building authority for Salt Lake. Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Building Plan Sanction for a Bungalow on a Large Plot in Salt Lake walks through that process, and Mutation and Property Assessment Under Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation in Salt Lake: A Plot Owner's Guide covers the records side. Statutory limits, fees and timelines vary by plot and must be confirmed for your own plot, and anything that becomes a legal, tax or lending question belongs with your lawyer, chartered accountant or lender.

  • Ask where the soil stack and floor trap sit and whether the design moves them
  • Confirm the waterproofing system, the coving height and that water will be ponded and held before tiling
  • Check who from the studio is on site the day the trap and the levels are set
  • Get the option list with every cost consequence written down before work starts

When a different kind of provider suits you better

If your layout is staying as it is, the plumbing is sound, the floor is not sunk and holding water, and you genuinely only want new tiles, a new basin and new fittings, then a good contractor with a plumber you already trust is the sensible route and a design fee is hard to justify on top of it. The same holds if you have already chosen a single branded modular fit-out and are happy with it, since that brand's own team will install its own product perfectly well. If you are selling the flat within the year, put the money into surfaces and leave the services alone, because nobody pays you back for a membrane they cannot see. Where we earn our place is the bathroom that has already failed once, or the one where the layout has to change and somebody has to own the consequences across the plumbing, the structure and the finishes together.

Starting your bathroom

At the end of the day the useful first step is a look at the room and the services rather than a conversation about tiles, and from that we can tell you honestly whether you are facing a refresh or a rebuild. You can get in touch with photos of the room, the age of the building and whether the ceiling below has ever stained. There is more on how we work in this part of the city on our Salt Lake area page, and on room by room work in interior design across Salt Lake. If the project includes staff accommodation with its own wet area, Servant Room and Help's Quarters Design in Salt Lake covers that, and for a bathroom inside a practice rather than a home, Clinic and Chamber Interior Design in Salt Lake is the closer fit.
