Best Interior Design Company in Salt Lake for Homeowners Who Want It Done Once

If you are typing this phrase into a search bar then you are almost certainly past the browsing stage, because people who are only curious search for pictures and people who are close to hiring search for a company, right. So let us assume you have a flat in one of the Salt Lake sectors, or a house on a plot off a block road, and two or three people have already walked through the space, and the numbers they left behind do not compare with each other in any way that helps you choose, because one quoted a per square foot figure for the whole flat, one quoted room by room with a long list of exclusions at the bottom, and one did not really quote at all and asked for an advance to start drawings.

That is the real question sitting behind this search, and it is not about who has the nicest moodboard, because at the end of the day almost everybody has nice moodboards now and they cost nothing to produce. The question is who will still be making the decisions on your project in the fifth month, when the false ceiling line disagrees with the duct of the air conditioner you picked, and the carpenter wants an answer that same afternoon, and the person who charmed you in your living room during the sales conversation is now three projects away and replying to messages at midnight.

Salt Lake makes that question sharper than most of the city does, because it is a planned township of sectors and blocks with a housing stock largely built for a different era of fittings and a different electrical load, and because the building authority here is the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation rather than the office that governs New Town. We are Studio Contour, we work out of New Town and across the Bidhannagar, New Town and Rajarhat belt, the principal architect is Sumana Kumar, and we have delivered 330+ buildings since 2014. We think we are the right studio for a homeowner in Salt Lake who wants this done once and then wants to be left alone to live in it, and what follows is the reasoning rather than the adjective, so you can judge the reasoning.

What getting it done once actually means in a Salt Lake home

Doing a home twice does not cost twice, it costs considerably more than twice, because you are first paying somebody to remove the first attempt before any new work can start, and then paying again in all the parts that never appear on a quotation, the extra months of living around a site, the furniture in storage, and the goodwill of the neighbours in your building. So when we talk about getting it done once, we mean something fairly narrow and technical, which is that the decisions that are expensive to reverse get made properly at the start, before a single sheet of plywood is cut.

In Salt Lake that usually means the unglamorous things. The service shaft your plumber has to work with was planned around an older generation of bathrooms, so an open shower or a relocated WC is a question about where the stack actually runs and not a question about tiles. The electrical load was sized before anybody expected three air conditioners, an induction hob and a water heater on the same board. The chajjas and the terrace waterproofing have already taken many seasons of the Kolkata monsoon, and if the previous repair was cosmetic then your new false ceiling is going to find the leak for you. None of this shows up in a moodboard, it shows up only when somebody has opened the wall, confirmed the route, checked whether the slab will take the dead load of the stone you liked, and then told you the honest version before you committed. That is the work that decides whether a Salt Lake flat is finished once, and it is also the first thing a package quote skips, because confirming it costs money before any has been earned. If you are starting with a single room rather than the whole flat, the way we scope that smaller piece is set out on our page for living room design in Salt Lake.

The principal architect stays on the project, and that is most of the argument

The person who designs your home should be the person who answers for it on site, and in our studio that person is Sumana Kumar, the principal architect, who stays with the project through the sanction stage and through execution instead of handing it to a junior once the agreement is signed and the advance has landed. That is not a courtesy, it is a structural choice about how the studio is organised, and it genuinely costs us something, because a principal's hour is the most expensive hour in any design practice and a studio that wants forty projects running at once cannot afford to spend it standing in your bedroom looking at a wardrobe shutter.

What it buys you is the quality of the ordinary decision. Most of a home is not decided in the big presentation, it is decided in the hundred small calls that get made while work is moving, the exact height of the kitchen counter for the person who actually cooks, whether the shower door fouls the WC at the dimension the mason has already set out, whether the socket behind the bed should move eight inches because the headboard grew. When those calls sit with the person who holds the whole scheme in their head they get answered in a way that keeps the design intact, and when they sit with somebody who joined after the concept was approved they get answered in a way that keeps the schedule intact, which is a different thing, and the difference shows up as a hundred small compromises that nobody can point to individually but everybody can feel.

Design curated to your flat or your plot, not pulled off a package shelf

Interior design as an industry has drifted hard towards packages, which is basically a fixed set of layouts and finish combinations priced per square foot, and it drifted that way for a sensible commercial reason, because a package is easy to sell, easy to quote on a phone call and easy to deliver at volume. The catch here is that your flat is not a package. The light in a flat facing the inner road of a block is not the light in a flat facing open ground, an older Salt Lake building with an 1,100 square foot carpet area is a different design problem from a newer 1,800 square foot apartment with two balconies, and a plot where you control the elevation and the window positions is a third problem again.

So what we actually do is start from the thing in front of us, the measured survey, the orientation, the family and how they use the day, and then design to that, which is slower and does not reduce neatly to a per square foot number at the first meeting. You can see the shape of this in our residential interior design work, and the Cornerstone House project in Salt Lake is an example of the ground-up residential category rather than a flat refit. Before anything gets built we put the scheme through 3D visualisation and rendering, not as a sales tool but because moving a kitchen island on screen costs an afternoon while moving it on site costs a fortnight. If your situation sits closer to the workspace end of things, for instance a flat you also consult from or a small office in the IT and commercial sector, the guide on Interior Designer in Salt Lake Sector V: Homes and Workspaces goes properly into that overlap.

Every option comes with its cost consequence attached

Here is the part that tends to decide it for people. Every option we put in front of you carries its cost consequence written next to it, so when you choose the veneer over the laminate, or the imported tile over the vitrified one, or the full height wardrobe over the standard one, you see what that single choice does to its own line item and to the total in the same breath. The budget then moves when you move, deliberately, and there is no conversation in the seventh month where the number has quietly grown by a third and nobody can point to the decision that grew it. It is a slower way to design, and it removes the comfortable ambiguity that lets a designer say yes to everything in the early meetings.

Architecture, interiors and the Bidhannagar route with one teamYou carry drawings and decisions between vendors

This is not a claim about anybody's integrity, it is a claim about where the margin sits in different business models. When a provider's revenue comes mainly from supplying and installing the materials, the design conversation and the pricing conversation are structurally the same conversation, and the trade-off that follows is that the cheaper of two honest answers is never the easier one to recommend. Our fee sits with the design and the delivery of it, so telling you the cheaper option is fine in your bedroom costs us nothing, which is exactly why we can say it.

Architecture, interiors and the Bidhannagar route sit with one team

Salt Lake sits under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and New Town sits under NKDA, and they are not the same office with the same expectations, which matters the moment your project is anything more ambitious than loose furniture. We prepare and run drawings through the Bidhannagar sanction process ourselves, so the layout that gets designed is the layout that gets drawn for sanction and the layout that gets built, rather than three slightly different versions of the same idea living with three different vendors. The statutory position on things like floor area ratio, ground coverage and setbacks varies by plot and does get revised, so we do not quote a figure from memory, we confirm the current position for your specific plot before the scheme is committed.

The longer version of how that route runs on a more complicated case is written up in our guide to Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Building Plan Sanction for a Mixed-Use Building With Ground-Floor Retail in Salt Lake, and if your drawings have already gone in and come back with queries then Best Help for a Salt Lake Plan That Bidhannagar Sent Back for Revision is written for exactly that position. The same one team logic applies when a space carries a functional brief on top of a domestic one, and the Dental Clinic Interior project in Kolkata is an example of that category. Something similar is true of treatment rooms, and Best Interior Designer for a Salt Lake Salon or Wellness Studio covers that one in its own right.

When a different kind of provider is honestly the better call

A page that only sells is easy to write and easy to see through, so here is the other side of it. If what you need is a flat that gets painted, polished and refitted with the existing layout left exactly where it is, no plumbing moved and no electrical rework, and you want it in six weeks at the lowest number on the table, then a contractor led fit-out will beat us on both price and speed and you should take it. If you already hold sanctioned drawings you are happy with and you only need somebody to draft a revision, a drafting service will do that for a fraction of our fee. If you are furnishing a rental you intend to leave in two years, a furniture brand's in-house design service is a sensible way to spend that money. And anything legal, financial or tax related, the ownership of an inherited share or the structure of a loan, belongs with your own lawyer, chartered accountant or lender, and we will say so rather than guess.

i
We will not be the lowest number on your table If price is the single deciding factor then a contractor led fit-out wins, and we would rather you knew that before paying us anything.

What to ask any studio in Salt Lake before you sign anything

Ask us these questions too, because the point of a list like this is that it separates studios structurally rather than on charm, and a studio organised the way we have described will answer all four in a sentence each without needing to go back to the office and check.

  • Ask who will be on your site in month four, by name and role
  • Confirm whether architecture, interiors and the sanction drawings sit with one team
  • Check that every material option comes with its cost consequence written beside it
  • Get the stage by stage payment and deliverable schedule in writing before any advance

How the work actually runs with us

  1. 01Measured survey and brief
  2. 02Layout and concept with cost bands
  3. 03Sanction drawings through Bidhannagar
  4. 04Working drawings and material selection
  5. 05Site execution and handover

The sequence matters more than people expect, because almost every project that goes badly went badly by starting a later stage before an earlier one was closed, for instance beginning joinery while the electrical layout was still being argued about, and so on. Each stage with us ends in a decision that is written down and priced, and the next one does not start until the previous one is signed off, which is unglamorous and is also the entire reason a project lands where it was supposed to. If your flat or plot sits in a particular pocket, the Salt Lake Sector 2 area page gives a sense of the kind of work we take on there.

Where to start

The honest next step is small. Send us the flat or plot details, the carpet area, the sector and block, whether you are refitting or building, and roughly where your budget sits even if that number is soft, and we will tell you what is realistic before anybody pays anybody anything. If you are still at the stage of weighing people rather than packages, the companion piece on The Best Person to Get Your Salt Lake House Designed By, and Why is the one to read next, and when you want to talk it through, our contact page is the fastest way to reach the studio.
