Studio Contour vs a National Turnkey Interior Brand: What the Package Actually Includes

Studio Contour vs a National Turnkey Interior Brand: What the Package Actually Includes

Most people who call us after speaking to a national turnkey interior brand are not confused about taste, they are confused about scope, because the quote they are holding reads like a finished number and yet nobody can tell them what happens to the parts of the job that sit outside the package. That is the real decision here, and it is not "local versus national" or "cheap versus expensive", it is whether you want a defined product delivered against a catalogue, or a scope written around your plot and your family from the first sketch onward.

We are Studio Contour, an architecture and interior practice in New Town Kolkata, working since 2014, with 330+ buildings delivered across New Town, Salt Lake, Rajarhat and greater Kolkata, so the comparison below is written from what we actually see when a homeowner brings us a package quote and asks us to read it. A large multi-city turnkey brand runs a genuinely good model, standardised, repeatable, priced fast, and that model is right for a set of people we will name plainly further down. What it is not is a custom design practice, and the gap between those two things is where budgets move.

What a turnkey package is actually pricing

A turnkey interior package is a productised scope, right, and that is its strength. The brand has a defined catalogue of modules, finishes, hardware tiers and per-running-foot rates, an estimator converts your carpet area into a number quickly, and because the catalogue is fixed the brand can hold a price and a timeline with reasonable confidence. When someone quotes you a figure in a first meeting, that speed is coming from the catalogue, not from a study of your home.

The catch here is what sits outside the module list. In most packages the priced core is loose furniture, wardrobes, modular kitchen design, false ceiling, lighting and painting, and the things that get handled as extras or simply excluded are civil work, plumbing shifts, electrical rerouting, waterproofing, structural changes, elevation work and anything statutory. On a fresh build or a serious renovation those excluded items are not small, so a package that looked complete becomes a base figure plus a second contract you did not plan for, and that is not anyone behaving badly, it is just what a productised scope can and cannot contain.

i
Read the exclusions page first Ask for the exclusions annexure before the pretty renders. If civil, plumbing, electrical rerouting and waterproofing are not inside the number, you are comparing two different jobs, and you should price the missing scope separately before you choose.

Curated to the plot, not selected from a catalogue

Our work starts before any finish is chosen, because on a Kolkata or New Town plot the design is decided by things a catalogue cannot see, so we begin with the plot itself, which side the road is on, where the neighbour's wall sits, where the afternoon sun lands, how the summer breeze crosses, where the stack of wet areas can sensibly go, and what the sanction drawings will allow. Only after that do we plan layouts and materials, and that is why two families with identical carpet areas get genuinely different homes from us rather than the same plan flipped.

For instance, a north-facing narrow plot and a west-facing corner plot with the same built-up area need different window strategies, different depths for the internal court or the light shaft, and different bathroom placement, and on a project like the Contemporary Full-Home Interiors project in Kolkata the resolution comes from the plot conditions rather than from a standard template. Where a family wants the plan to follow Vastu-compliant design principles we set that up at the layout stage, which is the only stage where it costs nothing, because retrofitting orientation logic after the walls are up is the expensive way to do it.

Personalised means the budget is built, not picked

When a package offers you three tiers, you are choosing which bundle to accept, and the trade-offs inside it were decided by someone who has never met you. We do it the other way, so we scope residential interior design line by line against what your family actually uses, which for one client meant spending heavily on the kitchen and the daughter's study and keeping the formal living room deliberately plain, and for another meant the opposite. Real personalisation shows up as a budget you can defend item by item, and a written fee structure, which is worth reading about in what a Kolkata architect's fee proposal should itemise before you sign anything.

Indicative and nothing more, because it moves with plot, specification and scope: interior work in Kolkata and New Town commonly lands anywhere from a modest per-square-foot figure for a light refresh to several times that for full custom joinery and stone, and any firm quoting you a firm number before a site visit is quoting the catalogue, not your home. Confirm every figure against a measured scope.

One roof, so nobody is coordinating three vendors

The structural reason handoffs hurt is simple, and it is not about effort. In a package model the design team, the factory and the site team are separate departments with separate incentives, and the person who sold you the layout is usually not the person standing in your flat when the plumber says the drain cannot move. When the same drawing set covers architecture, interiors and the submission, the shifted toilet stack is resolved on paper once instead of being argued about between three vendors on site.

That matters most around approvals, since a build in New Town, Salt Lake or Rajarhat has to pass through NKDA, KMC or Bidhannagar processes depending on where it sits, and we take projects through those processes ourselves, which is worth understanding via the NKDA building plan sanction process guide. Any figure you read for ground coverage, height or fee should be treated as indicative and confirmed with the authority for your specific plot, because those get revised and they vary by plot.

  2. 02Layout and elevation options priced against your priorities
  3. 03Sanction drawings and submission handled by us
  4. 04Interiors detailed from the same drawing set
  5. 05Site supervision with the principal architect still attached

The continuity nobody puts in a quote

The single biggest difference in day-to-day experience is who answers the phone in month five. A large multi-city firm allocates a senior designer across many live projects at once, so your regular contact is often a junior coordinator, and that is simply how that model scales at volume. In our practice Sumana Kumar, our principal architect, stays attached to the project rather than the file dropping to a junior after signing, which is also the mechanism that keeps scope creep visible, since the person who set the budget is the same person approving each change.

  • Ask who your site contact will be in month five, by name
  • Ask for the exclusions annexure in writing
  • Ask whether the firm files the sanction or you appoint someone else
  • Ask how a mid-project change is priced and approved
  • Ask for the drawing set you will own at handover

When the turnkey brand is genuinely the better call

We will say this plainly, because a comparison page that only sells is useless to you. If you have bought a completed flat with sound existing plumbing and electricals, you need nothing structural, you are happy choosing from a good catalogue, and what you want most is a fixed price and a predictable eight to ten week handover, then a turnkey package is very likely the better fit and you should take it. Standardisation is a real advantage when the job is genuinely standard, and interior design delivered from a well-run catalogue can be excellent work.

Come to a custom practice instead when the plot is unusual, when you are building from ground up, when walls, stacks or the elevation have to change, when the sanction route is part of the job, or when the family brief is specific enough that no tier will hold it. If you are still sorting out which kind of professional you need at all, the architect in New Town Kolkata guide and how to compare two architecture proposals that look identical are the two things worth reading before your next meeting.

At the end of the day both models are honest ways to build, and the only mistake is buying one while expecting the other. If you want someone to read your package quote line by line and tell you what is missing for your specific plot, bring it to us and talk to our studio, and if the honest answer is that a package suits you better, we will tell you that too.
