Wheelchair-Accessible Bathroom Layouts for Indian Homes

Almost every wheelchair-accessible bathroom brief that reaches our studio arrives late, and it arrives in one of two forms. Either a parent has had a fall or a stroke and the family suddenly discovers that the 1.2 metre wide toilet in their Salt Lake flat cannot physically admit a wheelchair, or a younger client who uses a chair full time is building fresh and has been handed a builder floor plan where the bathroom was sized by whatever was left over after the bedrooms were drawn. Both situations are fixable, but the cost and the disruption of fixing them are wildly different, and that difference is almost entirely about how early somebody thought about it.
We have been designing homes out of New Town since 2014, and across the 330 plus buildings we have delivered in New Town, Salt Lake, Rajarhat and greater Kolkata, the accessible bathroom is the single room where Indian construction habits fight hardest against the requirement. Our standard toilet is small, it is a wet room with a floor trap, the door opens inward because the corridor is narrow, there is a step up or step down at the threshold because the sunk slab needed a level change, and the fittings are chosen at the end from whatever is in stock. Every one of those five habits is a direct obstacle to a wheelchair, so an accessible bathroom is not a matter of bolting on a grab bar, it is a matter of unpicking those habits in the right order.
This piece is the working version of what we tell clients in the first meeting, covering the clear floor space you actually need, the three layouts that survive contact with a real Kolkata flat, what has to be decided before the plumber cuts the slab, what changes when you are retrofitting rather than building new, and roughly what the money looks like. The aim is that you walk into your own architect or contractor conversation knowing what to ask for, because the questions you fail to ask in week one become the walls you cannot move in month six.
Why the standard Indian bathroom fails a wheelchair before you even reach the fittings
Start with the numbers that define the problem. A typical manual wheelchair used at home is somewhere around 620 to 700 mm wide across the rear wheels and around 1050 to 1150 mm long, and those figures shift with the user, so we always measure the actual chair rather than trusting a catalogue. A powered chair is bigger and heavier in both directions. The person also needs room beside the toilet to make a transfer, and if they need an attendant, that attendant needs somewhere to stand that is not on top of the wheel. So the real question is never how big the room is, it is how much unobstructed floor is left once the door leaf, the WC, the basin and the shower zone have all claimed their share.
Now look at what a standard flat gives you. A common attached toilet in a New Town three bedroom apartment runs something like 1.2 by 2.1 metres, which sounds workable until you subtract a 600 mm deep basin, a WC that projects roughly 650 to 700 mm from the wall, and an inward opening door leaf that sweeps around 750 mm of the room. What is left is a corridor of clear floor barely wide enough to walk through sideways, and a wheelchair simply cannot rotate in it. That is why families who try to solve this with hardware alone end up disappointed, because the chair never gets far enough into the room for the grab bar to matter.
The second failure is the threshold. Indian bathrooms are almost always built with a raised kerb or a step down into a sunken floor, both of which exist for genuine reasons around waterproofing and drainage, and both of which stop a wheelchair dead. A 25 mm lip is a nuisance for a walking person and a hard barrier for a self propelled chair. Getting a flush threshold means the level change has to be absorbed inside the slab and the fall has to be built into the screed, which is a decision made by the structural drawing and not by the tiler. This is exactly the sort of thing we resolve during residential architecture rather than leaving it to site improvisation, because on site the default is always the step.
The third failure is quieter and it is about reach. Switches at 1300 mm, mirrors starting at 1100 mm, shelves at shoulder height for a standing adult, a shower mixer placed where you turn it while upright, all of these are set by habit, and every one of them sits above comfortable seated reach. General guidance on accessibility in built environments converges on keeping controls roughly in the 400 to 1200 mm band above finished floor for seated users, and treat that as an illustrative planning band rather than a code figure, because the right height for your home is the one your family member can actually reach from their own chair.
The clear floor space you are actually designing to
The working target we use is a clear turning circle of about 1500 mm diameter inside the room, which lets a manual chair rotate through 360 degrees without a shunt. That circle can pass under the basin if the basin is wall hung with an open underside, and it can overlap the shower zone if the shower is a flush wet area, so a 1500 mm circle does not mean 1500 mm of empty tile. That single trick, letting the circle borrow space from under fixtures, is what makes accessible bathrooms possible in flats where the room is genuinely small.
Where a full circle will not fit, the fallback is a T shaped turning space that allows a three point turn, which needs less total area but demands that the arms of the T stay unobstructed. It is a compromise and we say so to clients, because a three point turn is fine for someone with strong arms and tiring for someone recovering from a stroke. Beside the WC you want a clear transfer zone of roughly 800 to 900 mm on at least one side, and that side should be chosen around the user's stronger arm rather than around what looks symmetrical on the drawing.
Those numbers are our practical planning figures drawn from how the rooms behave once built, and they are illustrative rather than statutory. Three layouts that work in real Kolkata flats and houses
The first layout is the corner transfer plan, which we use most often in apartments. The WC sits in a corner with its back to a solid wall, the transfer side faces into the room, the basin goes on the wall opposite so it never blocks the transfer, and the shower occupies the far end as an open wet zone with a folding seat. The door is relocated so it opens outward or slides, which is usually what liberates the turning circle. This plan works in rooms from roughly 1.7 by 2.4 metres upward, and below that we are honest with clients that we are borrowing space from somewhere else.
The second layout is the through plan, used when the bathroom is long and narrow and cannot be widened. Here we put the WC at one end, the shower at the other, and the basin on the long wall between them, with the turning space sitting in the middle and overlapping both wet and dry zones. It is less comfortable than the corner plan but it saves a lot of demolition in older Salt Lake and Lake Town houses where the plumbing shafts are fixed and cannot move.
The third layout is the shared or Jack and Jill accessible bathroom, which we increasingly recommend in new builds. One generously sized accessible bathroom serves the accessible bedroom directly and the guest circulation through a second door, which means the family gets one properly sized room rather than two undersized ones. In a new house this often costs less than making every bathroom marginally bigger, and it concentrates the waterproofing detail and the blocking work in one place. On our ground plus four apartment building in New Town the same logic drove how the ground floor unit was planned, because ground floor units are where accessible provision belongs and the plan has to be resolved before the slab is cast rather than after.

Drainage, waterproofing and the Kolkata specific problem
A flush threshold means water has nowhere to be stopped by a kerb, so the entire control of water moves to the floor gradient and the waterproofing. We plan a fall of roughly 1 in 60 to 1 in 80 across the wet zone toward a linear drain set against the wall rather than a central trap, because a linear drain lets the whole floor tilt in one direction instead of dishing toward a middle point, and a dished floor is unpleasant to sit a wheelchair on. The drain body has to be positioned before the slab is sunk, which is again a drawing decision and not a site decision.
Waterproofing in an accessible bathroom is not the same job as in an ordinary one, because you are asking the membrane to hold water back over a larger wetted area and right up to a doorway with no kerb. We specify the membrane to turn up the walls well above the splash line, to be dressed into the drain flange rather than stopped short of it, and to be flood tested before tiling starts. The flood test is the step contractors most want to skip and the one we least allow, because a leak discovered after the tiles are laid means the whole floor comes out.
Kolkata adds its own pressure to this. High humidity for most of the year means an accessible bathroom with a big open wet floor dries slowly, and slow drying floors grow the algae film that makes tiles slippery, which is precisely the risk you were trying to design out. So we push hard on cross ventilation, an exhaust sized generously for the room volume, and a slip resistant tile with real texture rather than a matt finish that only looks textured in the showroom. Fixtures, grab bars and the blocking nobody remembers until it is too late
Grab bars are the visible part of accessibility and the least interesting part of the engineering. A grab bar is only as good as what it is screwed into, and a 75 mm partition wall built in lightweight block will not hold an adult's full body weight in a fall no matter how good the bar is. So the real work happens weeks earlier, when we mark out every future bar location on the wall elevation and instruct either a continuous plywood or steel backing plate behind the tile, or solid block coursework in those zones, or a small reinforced concrete upstand where the load case demands it. Do this and the family can add, move or upgrade bars for the next twenty years without opening a wall.
On the fixtures themselves, the pattern we settle on most often is a wall hung WC set with the seat top somewhere near the seat height of the user's own chair so the transfer is level rather than uphill or downhill, a wall hung basin with an open underside and a shallow bowl so knees clear it, a single lever or sensor tap because grip strength is frequently the limiting factor, a thermostatic shower mixer to remove the scald risk that comes with delayed reaction times, and a hinged shower seat with the controls reachable from the seated position rather than from the doorway. None of this is exotic and all of it is available in Kolkata, but it needs specifying in the tender rather than being picked at the counter, which is where a proper interior design scope pays for itself.
Lighting deserves a line of its own because it is quietly one of the biggest safety factors. Older users and users with reduced vision need more light and, critically, more even light, so a single ceiling point that casts the user's own shadow onto the WC is the wrong answer. We usually run a soft general layer plus a shielded mirror light plus a low level night light on a motion sensor, and we detail that alongside the rest of the false ceiling and lighting design so the wiring is in before the ceiling closes.
Retrofitting an existing bathroom versus building it in from day one
Retrofit is the more common brief and it is the harder one. In an occupied flat the constraints are the existing plumbing shaft position, the slab level, the wall thicknesses and whether the wall you want to remove is structural, and that last question needs a proper look rather than a mason's opinion. Where we can move a door to a sliding or outward opening leaf, borrow 300 to 400 mm from an adjacent bedroom or a redundant store, and convert a stepped floor into a flush one, a retrofit gets you a genuinely usable room. Where the shaft is boxed inside a shear wall and cannot move, we say so early instead of spending the client's money proving it.
The sequencing matters as much as the design. A single bathroom retrofit in a lived in home means the family loses that bathroom for the duration, so we plan around the second toilet, we get the demolition and the wet trades done in one continuous block rather than in convenient weekend chunks, and we hold the flood test as a hard gate before tiling. This is standard practice in our renovation and remodeling work, and the discipline is what keeps a three week job from becoming a three month one.
New build is far easier and far cheaper, because you are only paying for slightly more area and slightly better detailing rather than for demolition and making good. Cost, approvals and where the handoffs sit
On money, and treating everything here as indicative as of writing rather than as a quote, a new build accessible bathroom typically adds a modest premium over a standard one of similar finish, mostly in the linear drain, the thermostatic mixer, the backing plates and the slightly larger area, and in most projects we see that land somewhere in the region of fifteen to thirty per cent over the equivalent standard bathroom. A retrofit is a different animal because demolition, waterproofing, replumbing and making good dominate the number, and full accessible retrofits of a single bathroom in Kolkata have commonly landed anywhere from roughly two and a half to seven lakh depending on area, finish level and how much structure has to move. On approvals, most internal bathroom work inside an existing flat is a renovation matter rather than a sanction matter, but the moment you are building new, adding area, altering a structural element or touching the external envelope, you are into the plan sanction route, and the process, drawing set and document list are worth understanding before you start. There are also handoffs that are genuinely not ours. If the accessibility work is tied to a housing society approval, a rental agreement, a will or a property transfer, or if you are funding it through a loan or claiming any deduction or benefit, those are legal and financial questions and you should take them to your own lawyer, chartered accountant or lender rather than to your architect. What we can do is prepare the drawings, specifications and photographic records that those professionals will ask you for, and tell you at which week of the programme they will be needed, so that the paperwork side runs in parallel with construction instead of stalling it at the end.
An accessible bathroom done properly does not read as a hospital room, and that matters more to families than they usually admit at the first meeting. With the right tile, a wall hung basin, warm lighting and grab bars in a finish that matches the taps, the room simply looks like a well planned bathroom that happens to work for everyone in the house, which is the outcome we aim for in every residential interior design project where accessibility is part of the brief.
