A Modern U-Shaped Kitchen in Kashmir: A Studio Contour Interior Project
Inside the brief, the layout logic, and the material choices behind a Studio Contour kitchen project delivered entirely through remote design.

The Brief: A Kitchen Built for Srinagar Winters, Designed From New Town
When a client in Srinagar reached out to us about redoing their kitchen, the first conversation wasn't about tile samples or cabinet finishes, it was about how the room actually gets used across a Kashmir year, because a kitchen that works beautifully in a Kolkata flat can fall apart completely once you factor in six months of cold, shorter daylight hours in winter, and a household that cooks big, elaborate meals for extended family gatherings. We're Studio Contour, an architecture and interior design practice based in New Town, Kolkata, running since 2014, and in that time we've delivered over 330 buildings, most of them across New Town, Salt Lake, Rajarhat and the greater Kolkata region. But a meaningful share of our work now happens for clients who live nowhere near us, in Gurgaon, in Jammu, in Srinagar, in Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat, in Karnataka, Punjab, Goa, Gangtok, Madhya Pradesh, Ayodhya and Agartala, and this Srinagar kitchen is one of those projects, delivered entirely through remote design and digital handoff.
The project itself, which you can see in full on our modern U-shaped kitchen project page, started with a fairly ordinary complaint that we hear from a lot of clients regardless of city: the existing kitchen felt cramped, the workflow between stove, sink and storage didn't make sense, and there wasn't enough counter space for the kind of cooking this particular household actually does. What made it interesting from our end was working out how to solve that problem for a climate and a building type we don't get to walk into physically, using video calls, photographs, measured drawings sent back and forth, and a lot of very specific questions about how the existing structure was actually built.
Why a U-Shape Made Sense Here
A U-shaped kitchen layout puts counter and storage on three connected walls, which gives you the classic work triangle, stove, sink, refrigerator, sitting close enough together that a cook isn't crossing the room fifteen times to finish a meal, but it also means you're committing a fairly generous footprint entirely to the kitchen. That's not always the right call. In a lot of the compact apartments we design for in New Town, an L-shaped or galley layout is the more honest answer because the available floor area just doesn't support a full U without the room feeling like a corridor. For this Srinagar home, though, the existing room had the depth and width to support three full runs of cabinetry without anyone feeling boxed in, and the household's cooking habits, big pots, multiple dishes going at once, a preference for prepping everything before the stove gets turned on, meant the extra counter length actually got used rather than sitting empty as showroom space.
The other factor, and this is one that comes up constantly in our residential interior design work regardless of where the client lives, is storage discipline. A U-shape gives you more linear cabinet run than almost any other kitchen layout of comparable footprint, which matters a great deal in a household that stocks up for winter the way many Kashmir homes do, dry goods, preserves, seasonal produce that needs to last through months when fresh vegetables are harder to come by. We planned the base cabinets and the upper storage around that reality rather than around a generic "modern kitchen" template, which is really the whole point of doing this kind of project properly instead of just handing over a Pinterest-board layout.
Material and Climate Decisions
Kashmir's winters aren't a footnote in a kitchen brief, they're one of the central design constraints, because a room that's cold, damp for parts of the year, and gets noticeably less daylight for stretches of winter needs different material choices than the same room would in Kolkata. We leaned toward warmer-toned finishes and cabinetry that reads well under artificial light for longer stretches of the day, since natural light hours shrink considerably in December and January. Countertop and backsplash materials were chosen with an eye toward durability against temperature swings rather than purely aesthetic trend, because materials that are fine in a climate that stays warm and humid year-round can behave differently when a room goes from a heated interior to genuinely cold ambient conditions overnight.
We also paid close attention to natural ventilation and how the kitchen would perform when windows realistically stay shut for months at a stretch, which is a very different design problem than the Kolkata homes we build day to day, where cross-ventilation and heat dissipation dominate the thinking. Getting that balance right, enough airflow for cooking exhaust without designing a room that bleeds heat all winter, meant a lot of back-and-forth with the client about how the existing structure was ventilated before we touched anything, what the window and door openings actually were, and how the household typically uses heating in that room. None of that came from a site visit. It came from photographs, floor measurements the client and their local contractor sent us, and a series of video calls where we asked, frankly, a lot of very specific questions.
Lighting, Layout Zones and the Vastu Question
Every kitchen we design gets broken into functional zones before a single cabinet drawing gets finalized, wash zone, prep zone, cooking zone, storage zone, and for this project we worked those zones around the U-shape so the wettest and hottest activities, the sink and the stove, sat on separate legs of the U with the prep counter connecting them in between. That's a fairly standard planning principle, but the client also asked us to keep the layout Vastu Shastra compliant, which is a request we get from a meaningful share of our clients across every city we work in, not just Kolkata. Vastu-informed kitchen planning generally favors the cooking zone toward the southeast, with the cook facing east while working, and a layout that avoids placing the stove and the sink directly opposite one another because of the fire-water conflict that Vastu principles flag. We worked those preferences into the U-shape without compromising the actual workflow, which is really the craft of it, a lot of contractors treat Vastu as a checklist bolted onto a finished plan, and we'd rather build it into the layout logic from day one.
For artificial lighting, given how much of the year this kitchen gets used under lamps rather than daylight, we specified layered lighting rather than a single central fixture, task lighting under the upper cabinets for the counters, a stronger ambient layer for the room as a whole, and warmer color temperatures throughout rather than the cooler, more clinical white light that shows up in a lot of contemporary kitchen photography. This is the kind of decision that our false ceiling and lighting design work covers on nearly every project, but it mattered more here than usual precisely because of how many hours of the day this particular kitchen runs on artificial light through the winter months.

We walked the client through both options early on, because a U-shape isn't automatically the right answer just because the room could physically fit one, and it's worth laying out why we landed where we did.

For this Srinagar home, the room's proportions and the household's actual cooking habits tipped the decision toward the U-shape fairly early, but we've built plenty of L-shaped kitchens for clients where the room geometry or the way the family cooks made that the smarter call. The point isn't that one layout beats the other in the abstract, it's that the layout has to answer to the room and the people using it, which is basically the whole argument for working with a designer rather than copying a floor plan off the internet.
The Remote Design Process, Start to Finish
A fair number of people assume a project like this needs boots on the ground in Srinagar at some point, and the honest answer is that the design side genuinely doesn't, though the execution side absolutely needs a capable local team, and we're upfront about where that line sits.

Everything up to that last step happens through video conferencing, shared drawing files, and a lot of photographs from the client's side documenting the existing space, wall conditions, window placements, plumbing and electrical points, the kind of detail we'd normally confirm on a site walk but here had to build from documentation instead. Our 3D visualization and rendering work carries a lot of the weight in this kind of remote process, because a client who can't walk through a physical mockup needs to actually see the space rendered accurately enough to trust the decision before materials get ordered. We've found that a good rendering catches problems, a counter run that reads as narrower than it looks on paper, an upper cabinet that would sit awkwardly against a window, well before they become expensive mistakes on site.
What we don't do, and want to be direct about, is manage the on-ground construction or handle any local municipal approvals in Srinagar. That part sits with the client's own local team, whether that's a local architect-of-record, a structural consultant, or the contractor executing the work, and we hand off drawings and specifications complete enough for that team to build from without needing us to interpret anything on a call.
